Does anyone have other pastimes? |
Mountain-biking; hiking; movies; cafes w friends; visiting friends; travelling to interesting places; beaches; windsurfing; walking; reading; art galleries; photo exhibitions; interesting discussions; writing ... to name a few. - Oh, and the occasional drink ! - It can be done !! |
I've noticed that people who have as many interests/pastimes as you do don't drink very much. Over-drinking fills the void, I guess. |
- Not at all. As well as drinking from time to time, I also have time to do other things |
I wrote "very much". Puritan Americans - and other Anglo-Saxons seem to think that drinking = drinking yourself to a stupor.
I drink. Almost every day. A tiny glass of wine with my meal and maybe a cocktail or two when I go to an izakaya or celebrate.
In my first post I specifically referred to binge-drinking. Yes, that's what it's called when you drink a copious amount at frequent social gatherings (or just alone). |

Haven't drank in about 10 years. Just not into it. Also, I don't like the way my face looks when I'm drunk...
Meanwhile - things I can do because I don't have a regular drinking habit
hang with my wife
go to the cinema every weekend
garden (currently jalapenos, habaneros, tomatoes and curry leaf - I love summer)
a PhD in Critical Pedagogy (6 months to go)
compose abstract-ambient-dub music
play with my cat
exercise (yoga)
cook
etc...
When my J-Teacher colleagues ask if I drink, I tell them:
"because I enjoy [all of the above] too much and don't really have the time to drink."
That said, I am a bit of a tea fiend. |

You did, my bad. Was having a case of Friday brain-itis and missed the very much. Must be time to leave the office and start the weekend .. |

i used to drink.
I still do but I used to too.
Wow, this post is surprising. I didn't realize that there were so many foreigners in Japan that didn't drink. I have only met 2 since 2001- I guess I hang with the wrong crowd. |

Don't drink; never have.
Do go out with those who do sometimes. Some Japanese coworkers were surprised to see I could have fun with them without drinking/getting drunk. |

May I ask the age of all you non-(binge) drinkers?
I wonder sometimes if the bingers are just young 'uns with no interests (yet). I'm pretty young myself. |

There are many good reasons for drinking
And one has just entered my head
If a fellow can't drink when he's living
How the Hell does he drink when he's dead?
Anonymous
Bessy Bradock:'Sir, you are drunk!'
Winton S. Churchill: Yes Madam, and you are ugly. But tomorrow I'll be sober.'
'I have taken more out of alcohol than alcohol has taken out of me.'Winston S. Churchill
Cheers!

And here's some more to think about:
The horse and mule live thirty years
And nothing know of wines and beers;
The goat and sheep at twenty die
And never taste of Scotch or Rye;
The cow drinks water by the ton
And at eighteen is mostly done;
The dog at fifteen cashes in
And without the aid of rum or gin;
The cat in milk and water soaks
And then in twelve short years it croaks;
The modest, sober, bone-dry hen
Lays eggs for nogs, then dies at ten.
All animals are strictly dry,
They sinless live and early die.
But sinful, ginful, rum-soaked men
Survive for three-score years and ten
And some of them, a very few
Stay pickled 'til they're ninety two.

Clearly. Does drinking interfere with your ability to ride a bicycle/razor scooter? |

Haven't tried yet, Canuck-copycat.
Not that this info will lay the crutch/tired joke to rest.
