People, it's called inference--
After reading posts for a few weeks, I'm simply stunned by the amount of people who refer to their significant others with the *racial prefix. Come on, guys, we can guess where your girl originated from without your having to state it explicitly. We can make a conclusion from the nature of your post, or by the fact that your living in Japan (or aspiring to).
Is it a sense of pride, is it utter stupidity? Inquiring minds...
Anywho, I'm not aiming to pi$$ anyone off, but just realize how silly it sounds:
"Oh, yeah, me and my J-K-L-M-N-O-P Girl where out the other day...blah blah blah, Z-girls are so weird!"
This is a teaching forum, if anyone should be pithy and clear in their speech, it should teachers...(or those aspiring)
*I know that word is an anachronism, but worse things have happened...

Since coming to Japan I have dated A, C, K, S, and J guys. If you can't figure out all the letters, good because it doesn't really make a difference. Why bring it up unless it's a key piece of information in your post?
That said, sometimes it does matter. For example, many relationship misunderstandings that come up on this board have their roots in linguistic or cultural differences (many don't as well, and are just relationship issues like any other). Also, topics having to do with children, in-laws, etc are influenced by the nationality and ethnicity of the people involved. Also, if someone is asking if their girlfriend can get a certain kind of visa or job, it sometimes matters where she is from. Racial perceptions are also discussed here (stuff like "will people make assumptions about my Thai fiance?" etc etc.)
But all in all, I agree that more often than not people add it in when it really doesn't make any difference. |

OP,
I believe Dave's vets Gordon and JimDunlop2 are Canadians living in Japan and married to Canadian women.
Also, Canuck is engaged to a razor scooter.
So, there are three people to start. Plenty of other couples as well that I knew in Japan that were both from the same country.
I agree with what you originally said, just pointing out that you can't draw the conclusion every time as you stated. |

She's dating someone who refers to her as a "J-Girl";
her opinion is null.

My wife is Korean and our life together began in Japan.
My friend, a Pakistani born in Jersey, was dating a Cambodian when we were students in Tokyo.
Another friend was English and he was dating an Italian in Tokyo.
Isn't it more ignorant to just assume everyone has a Japanese wife/husband/girlfriend/boyfriend? |

You are correct. Though I'd wager those odds are stacked.
People who are getting hissy about this thread: you've either missed the point, or are in some form of defensive denial.
To reiterate, sometimes people are a bit redundant (headtrip!) in their descriptors, and I think its due to wanting the public to know that they've managed to snag a member of a certain ilk.
Some of you are attacking a straw man... |

I just want everyone here to know that I've dated a Brazilian girl. It was amazing and you should all be jealous. |

+1 bornslippy1981 LOL
Razor Scooters for life! If you can't ride a bicycle, because you're afraid of hitting people, due to ineptness and lack of coordination, Razor Scooters must be the only way! Riding a bicycle is far too difficult. How does anyone do it?
Here's my J-razor scooter.
