Dear friends,
Can anyone tell me what the city of guangdong is like to work in , live in, find accommodation in? I will be teaching there in september and I want to have some idea about the place beforehand.
Also, I will need to renew my visa to cover august and september(two whole months.) until I get a full work visa, etc. If I'm down there near Hong Kong wouldn't it be simple to go toHong Kong for 3/4 days and get a tourist visa there for two/three months?
Thanks for any light you can shed

Jeepers, do a search on words like "visa run", "hong kong", "guangzhou" (sans quotation marks) and I bet ya you're gonna find tons of information. |

No such city is known to me nor to anyone I happen to know... Yes, Guangzhou city in Guangdong province does exist but that's a whole different chapter.
Anyway, as the previous poster said you can get plenty of information in the archives. If you are not satisfied with what you find there try www.asiaxpat.com or www.thatsprd.com. |

maek,
If you do mean Guangzhou in Guangdong Province and you are living/working in the city proper (not Pan Yu etc) and the job is ok then you'll have a great time. Top city. Hot and steamy not only applies to the weather but also to the girls and the food. Advise you research further on actual location. |

What a minute - - you already know you'll be working there (in Guangzhou) and have accepted a job, regardless of what kind of city it is? Wow, that really is a leap of faith.
In my few trips to Guangzhou, I've always found it hot and humid (even warm and a bit humid in the winter months!). It's a vast, congested city just like any major Chinese metropolis. Plenty of good restaurants of pretty much any style of food you may crave. Plenty of shopping, movie theaters that actually show movies in English, and I once saw ice skating at a mall - - can't remember which one now. It's close to Hong Kong, Zhuhai, Macau (where you can easily jet off to any SE Asian country). So my opinion is, if you can stand the heat and the crowds then you'll do okay there . . . probably. |
