I'd like to teach in a Southeast Asian country for four months this winter -- Nov. - Feb. and I'm wondering how I can find work for just this time period. I have a Bachelor's in Education (social sciences and English), a lifetime California Secondary Teaching Credential and a Masters in Library Science, with lots of experience as a teacher and as an academic librarian. Do you know if I might find university students who would want help learning English and/or need help with library research and writing their papers? I do not have training in ESL at this time -- not sure if I would need this certificate if I'm working with university students on a freelance basis.
A related question is would this bring in a stable income? I'd like to cover my basic travel expenses. Any advice you can give me would be very much appreciated. |

I think you would be looking at getting short term conversation school/ private lessons by showing up with a tourist visa and changing it after you get a job. Your credentials are great, but you need to look at the school year in each country you'd be interested in going to (for example, the most popular SE Asian country for foreigners is Thailand. The school year starts in May and ends in February). I read that universities interview in August, though.
SE Asia is not a high paying market. It could cover your travelling expenses in the individual country, or maybe even within the area, but that's it (plus, you would be working most of the time, so you likely wouldn't have much time to travel. You probably aren't going to get vacation time from a four month contract!)
Why don't you repost this in a related forum (Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam etc or general Asia)? |
