It is possible to teach English illegaly. Then you wouldn't have to show any documents at all, in many cases:)
Legally? I'd imagine that it is not possible, considering that you are now required to provide criminal record:) |

If they are asking people to submit criminal record when applying for work permit, I suspect you wouldn't be able to get work permit if your criminal record is not clean.
I dunno if they ignore mild offences, but all in all, you shouldn't have a criminal record. Then again... who knows how far bribes would take you, especially if you work outside of bangkok. |

This is really going to be a problem as I am trying to tackle the issue now. I have no criminal record but due to the new privacy laws that were passed recently all background checks must be done through the FBI. And what will make it next to impossible is that the FBI, on it's website specifies that the waiting period for background checks is 14-18 weeks AFTER they recieve the paperwork, which of course will in my case have to be mailed from Thailand. Thats way too long for any VISAs including a non B. My school is going to submit my paperwork anyway and wait and see if the Thai government will make an exception due to the impossibility of the matter in nearly all cases regarding teachers here. Apparently you can't just have your relatives go down to the local police department and get anything because they wont give it to them. |

Interesting last post. I now work in criminal law and it is certainly the case in the UK that you would need an advanced CRB check to get any kind of job that involves teaching kids. However, you could be looking at three to four months after they get the paperwork as a minimum. so, if the thai govt have then to make exceptions for all American and UK citizens on the basis that it just takes too long to do the necessary then it may well be that as with many initiatives in Thailand its just quietly shelved. C'mon guys its Thailand, anything is possible. I know a bloke there who has been on the run for years, has no passport and is in his 10th year there and its never bothered him in the least. |

macka,
Why are you so very interested in the issue of criminal background checks if you don't have a criminal record yourself?
This is the second thread you've started in the past month about the issue. |

Does it matter?
Thailand has made itself completely irrelevant as a teaching destination. No one cares... |

From what I understand, Thai Im. is only interested in the fact that you can present them with a vaild BA, and official transcripts for the Non B visa.
Unlike the US or UK, Thai immigration does not do the equivilant of FBI fingerprinting or background checks for teaching positions.
Good Luck! |
