So what does this mean in ads? I'm curious as to whether it generally means, a few weeks so you should either be in-country or prepared to work on a tourist visa, or just within the next couple months, as soon as all things can be arranged.

I know applying is a good way to find out, but I was wondering if you felt there was a tendency for the ads to swing one way or the other.

I'd say 90% of the time it means coming on a tourist visa.

Not sure where you got that figure? Do you just come up with these things to sound like you know what's going on?


I applied and interviewed at 5-6 places while I was in Japan. Many of them were looking for me to start ASAP. Of course, I was in the country and already had a work visa.

Despite them needing me ASAP, I said I would have to give 30 days notice at my job. I don't know why they would think if they hired somebody who up and left their job that day, wouldn't do the same to them when a better offer came along?

So you still managed 30 days out of each of those companies?

Would you say then that it's not necessarily a "next week" sort of thing, even if they try to pressure you into it? Just trying to get a feel for the hiring practices and tricks, I guess. It's a useful thing to understand...

All but one of the companies were okay waiting a month.

The company that wanted me to start the next week wasn't a good fit anyway, and I was more so there for the interviewing practice for the job I did want.

I did end up with the job I wanted, and was working at both places at the same time. The way I managed this though was because I already had holiday time at my old job, and instead of taking the trip I planned, I did my training at the new job. I also lucked out because the new school was on holiday for two weeks in August, and I finished off my time at my old job during that period. The double income for 3 weeks or so was nice too.

If the people try to pressure you into the job, and you're not comfortable giving your job zero notice, then let them know you want to give proper notice. If they're so desperate, it's because somebody up and left them with no notice, and obviously they don't care if you do the same to their competition.
