PAzine,

You might like to consider Suzhou, but make quite sure you are in the town centre, not stuck out in the sticks of Suzhou Industrial Park.

Suzhou is rated one of China's main tourist attractions, with canals and ornamental gardens galore. There are bars, cafes, Western foodstuffs, and a reasonable ex-pat community (many Koreans and Germans) - check out website <www.whatsoninsuzhou.com> where they are currently advertising for TEFL-certified folks for 18 hours per week for 7,000-8,000 rmb a month. Single apartment provided +visa sponsorship, medical insurance, flight reimbursement. You can almost double your salary on private lessons and university essay proof-reading/editing.This is what my girlfriend does.

There is no problem with internet access, but can be slow at peak times, like weekend evenings.

Good luck

Not only is there bound to be much less demand, but also you're competing with Mandarin students and other hardcore sinophiles.

Yeah, that's a good point.

Cheers. Smile

EDIT: Clarification on the punch line Laughing

Thanks, Scouse. It's definitely now on the list of places I will look into. Sounds right in all regards.

I'm getting the impression from looking around that 6-10,000 is indeed possible... in a decent community... with low hours... and a stimulating environment... maybe...

Not impossible, anyway...

i lived in suzhou for a year, and now i live in chengdu. i'd say you could find a job with under 20 hours in any city, but out west (chengdu/kunming), you'll be hard-pressed to find one that also pays 6000. average university salary here seems to be 4000.

you can make quite a bit more in suzhou (when i lived there in 2004-05, the average starting seemed to be about 6000, and there were certainly jobs that paid much higher). however, i thought it was dull as anything, but that was a few years ago and i was 22 and just out of college. now i might have a different opinion on it. but i don't know that i'd call it laid back. there are a lot of businessy expats there because it's one of china's special foreign-investment region thingies.
