Hi,
I am a newbie on the forums, but I've come here regularly to read posts about Taiwan and some schools. My questions are thus:
I am currently living and teaching in Taiwan. Came over in Feb.
Before I came over I got a TEFL certificate(which in Taiwan is not needed, but still got it)
I am an older person(under 40 though)
To be frank- I am not happy with the employer I choose. I think in terms of teaching English as a foreign/second language their material they provide sucks! You only see your students once a week and some of mine I only see every second week as I am rotating classes. You teach all skills in 2 hours and frankly that makes it even worse. The teachers books have so many errors in them and are really badly written. As a teacher it doesn't give me much space for creativity and scope to really "teach" something meaningful to the students.
For some unknown reason,my head CT at my school has got something against me...believe me, I've always been friendly when going to school and done nothing that I know of to make her react the way she does. She doesn't like women..which of course I am.It means I get no extra work.
Now the premise of my question...Am I wrong in wanting to find something better where at least I won't be discriminated against because I am a woman, and where maybe I can really actually teach meaningfully?
Are there such schools out there? Or am I just expecting too much?
I just feel that I didn't sell everything I ever owned, and left an ok life, to move halfway across the world to be treated like this.
I cannot talk to my supperiors about this..beacuse unfurtunately, English speaking teachers don't have musch value in their eyes and we are the ones that are wrong..not the Chinese speaking staff.
Yeah..some of you out there will know which employer I'm talking about...but I don't want to mention the place by name. |

Of course there are schools out there....but it depends on what city you're in and what you want to do. If your school is severely lacking in the curriculum department, then you could offer to help them create curriculum (for extra pay of course). Or, you could start a job search for other schools that provide a more solid curriculum, and a more serious approach to teaching.
Just because you are woman, you are not less valuable. I know because probably over 75% of the teachers, and 95% of the Chinese staff at the 5 branches of my school are women. There are several female teachers who have been there for over 5 years and are making an hourly wage well over $700nt. I suggest you start your job search, because this job is too easy, and if your CT makes you this unhappy, they are probably just jealous of you because they are making 1/10th of what you do, and they probably think you don't work very hard for your money.
Don't be afraid to get out there and drop off some resumes. If you wouldn't put up with a job like this back home, why would you do it here? |
