some posters tells us to research - and then when we ask questions - others tells us to be quite!!!
All I want is to find out about Shane's - from the proverbial horses mouth - do you think I should PM Tom |

Tom has not come here singing the praises of the school nor advertising it as a great place to work. If he had then I would agree that he should support his claims with some evidence to back that up. Just the same that those who claim that it is a terrible place to work should back their claims up with some evidence of that!
Quite clearly his involvement was to answer the OP's question which is what he has done. Additionally he was asked why he felt it was a good school to work at and he answered this. He is under no obligation to answer all aspects of employment with the school that he works for.
If you are researching the prospect of working at Shane then by all means contact him by PM or even better contact the school directly. But to continue to badger someone just because he had the hide to say something positive about the school that he works for is really just very sad! |

Tom's very first post on Dave's (in another thread) started thus -
| Quote: |
| As the Tom Ferguson referred to in the OP, I'd like to present a more balanced version of events. I am Director of Studies for Shane English Schools China, and my job does involve the recruitment of new teachers. |
So when Clark writes -
| Quote: |
| He is under no obligation to answer all aspects of employment with the school that he works for |
Well since his work should include informing potential recruits about all aspects of employment at Shane's - then I don't see why we shouldn't ask him for more info on this chain. After all it seems to be part and parcel of his every-day employment!!!!
this is a funny one -
| Quote: |
| If you are researching the prospect of working at Shane then by all means contact him by PM or even better contact the school directly |
since because of Tom's job you'll probally be contacting him on both counts |

Only if you happened to apply for a job at the school for which he is a Director of Studies!! In the case of the OP this would not be the case.
I don't have a problem with questions nor research and in fact I am a big advocate of both.
I am just disappointed to see the badgering of people just because they happen to have something nice to say about a school. Asking legitimate questions for informational purposes is one thing - badgering to further a personal agenda is another.
So vikdk as you seem to be so interested in Shane Schools have you taken the time to contact them or Tom to find out the real facts? |

There are a couple members here who seem to be obsessed with attacking people who have anything that is NOT bad to say about language mills. It just doesn't matter how nice you try to reason with them. In the end, they see it as their personal crusade to pursuade people that NO languages mills are nice places to work at. They will go out of their way to twist and bend what people say just to win by making sure the other parties get so frustrated they simply stop responding. In another thread, the OP asked about the possible consequences of breaking a contract, one member jumps in quickly and tell people what kind of cheats and crooks that local branch of Aston is. The OP has even said that the employer is not that bad, and has quite clearly indicated that it is the obvious feeling of loneliness and boredom that has made him want to quit.
Tom.Ferguson seems to be quite open and frank so far, so what's with the relentless attacks? |

Tom's not an ordinary DOS - he's the chief DOS who works in Shane head office at Shanghai - and has special responsibilities regarding recruiting. I know this because he wrote in another thread -
| Quote: |
| Some of our schools in China have a native speaking Academic Manager, and they are able to hire their own teachers without the need to go through ourselves at the Head Office in Shanghai. |
So when Clark writes that you can either contact Tom by PM or contact the Shane organisation to find out about this school - and I tell him that you are probably contacting Tom in both cases - and Clark then answers --
| Quote: |
| Only if you happened to apply for a job at the school for which he is a Director of Studies!! |
Then you do get the feeling that Clark needs to brush up on his research techniques!!!!!!
By the way if you look at Toms profile he lists the Shane website as his own - so if your looking for more info why not contact him - its the same as contacting Shane HQ - but why does the chief DOS of Shanes want to push this questioning into the world of PMs when we have started an open debate on Shanes what is there to hide????? |

What does it matter what position he holds there? The fact is that he works there and as such has personal experiences upon which he bases his opinions which is more than we can say about you.
None of this takes away from the fact that your continued badgering of people who have nice things to say about schools actually achieves the opposite to what you claim to be trying to achieve. How can you expect to know the truth if you are only willing to listen to half of the information that is presented?

I get the feeling that vikdk needs to brush up on his reading techniques actually!
I recommended that the OP contact the school which in his case was in Beijing which according to what you write here is not the school that Tom works at. So do you care to explain to me how you call into the school in Beijing and find Tom sitting at a desk there? |

well the credibility of information, may have something to do with professional agenda of a poster - and this surely must be a huge influence on how one views the info that posters gives - or indeed lack of it as the case seems here. I would have thought the cheif of DOS's for a large teaching chain would have quite a hefty professional agenda when writing here (after all this guy certainly aint no Joe ordinary FT - he's the guy that holds a large part of the responsibility in recruiting them).
In short if somebody was telling me about a school - I'd certainly want to know what level of link they had with that institution/company - isn't that a perfect case of common sense??????? |

| speaking directly to teachers currently working in ANY school when considering a job there is excellent advice & i assume the OP is currently trying to find a way to do this rather than responding to the cr*p being spouted on this thread by one person in particular (mentioning no names) |

So why don't you contact him by PM like he mentioned before? He offered you to contact him to tell you the details. He then can tell you his level and position at that school, and any other relevant information. So, IS THAT A PROBLEM?
The answer to the OPs question was basically taken care of earlier. Tom told the OP to contact the foreign teachers for an assessment of the school/company. SO WHAT'S THE PROBLEM WITH THAT???? |

Let's face facts, Shane's English School does not have a good reputation.
There is no point denying it.
Yes like most schools, there will be good and bad points but Shane keeps coming up time and time again during my research for schools.
If we are talking about schools in Japan, I even put Nova as being better than Shanes and I think Nova are quite bad as well.
If for example you want to teach in Japan I rate these companies in order of preference: Jet, Aeon, Geos, ECC, Interac, Nova, Shane.
Say no to Shane, you won't regret it |

Thanks for the brilliant advise sinko - at least now when I, or anybody else PM's Tom, for info on Shane's, we'll know who we're PM'ing - the Chief DOS of Shane's - which in my very humble opinion could cast a certain light over any reply we got - but then again maybe I'll ask him for info on how to get into one of those top management positions - hardly worth talking to the ordinary monkeys at Shane's about that, is it |
