So my wife and I have read her contract very thoroughly, and we have been reading up on the boards and we came across something here in Daveseslcafe, but it isn't in the contract.
We have been told, and read in the contract that there is an $8,000 decorating bonus given to the new teachers. No where in the contract does it specify where it comes from, but here on the boards, we have seen several mentions of it comes from your 3rd year of the contract, and if you cut your contract before that you owe it to the school.
Is that correct?
Where is this money allocated in the contract, and how does it effect you if your are let go in say year 2, or decide to leave in at the end of year 2???
can someone clarify this for me please? |

Haven't heard about any bonuses, but the $8,000 "Bonus" is possibly your funiture allowance.
Historically, federal institutions provide a housing/furniture allowance.
The allowance is what you'll use to buy things like cookers, ice box, washer, dryer, etc.
The way this "bonus" has worked in the past is that it is actually a loan. For each year of service, one-third of your loan is written off.
At the end of service, you can ship your items home (if they're still intact), or sell them (and keep the cash).
Overall, the system provides a reasonable means of furnishing a basic household, and also provides fair incentive for its staff to remain in the employment of the institution.

Back when they had the 2 year contracts, the furniture allowance was amortized over 4 years. I left in my 4th year because issues back home forced me to go back, and they took a nominal amount back from my final pay and it was calculated practically to the day. I got significantly more than this deduction from selling my stuff, so in fact got a nice profit out of it.
