My name is Paul Carr. I posted here before about a year ago before I first came to China. Well, I'm about to finish my year long contract with a college in the Beijing area. And, anyway, I was looking around for another job. I'm from Ireland but, to be frank, I don't want to go back to Ireland for the summer. I'd like to travel around China instead. Anyway, I have a number of requests. Can anyone give me a list of colleges/universities in Beijing? I want to find a job in Beijing city. My present job is a little outside of Beijing city and, since I live in Beijing city, it's a bit of a commute. It would be useful for me to have a convenient list of colleges/universities in the Beijing area complete with e-mail addresses so that I can send them all a job application and resume.

Ideally, I want to find a job in a college and university in the Beijing city area. I have an apartment already in the Beijing city area so the college/university I work won't have to pay extra money for an apartment for me. So, anyway, ideally, I'm looking for a minimum of 8,000 RMB a month job. And, yeah, my present work contract ends on July 15th so I want to arrange a new job where I can get a new work contract from July 15th but won't be working until the beginning of the university season at the end of September, I think. Maybe beginning of September. In the meantime, I can do some travelling around China.

Presently, I work in a private college in the Beijing area. It's not what one would describe as the best college in the city or country. The students in my college, for example, fail their entrance exams. I was wondering if it is difficult to get work in a public university. Do TEFL teachers ordinarily need more than a TEFL degree and university degree? Do they also need a masters degree for example? or Phd or something like that?

I want to teach in a college/university. I want to teach adults, not children.

Anyway, a few days ago, I went to 2 job interviews in Beijing city in private schools. To be honest, I am not too keen in working in a private school but, out of curiosity, I went to two interviews. My understanding is that private schools pay better than colleges/universities, both public and private, but they don't offer you as much holidays. You have to work during the summer months and so on. I'm not too keen on that. I've been working hard enough these past few months in the college I'm in.

Anyway the two private schols I went to interviews in were:

Dell English

and

Guobin Institute.

Anyone here got any opinions or experiences of these places. What are they like to work in?

Actually, I have received quite a number of phone calls from private schools these past few days including:

Wall Street English..

Are they good?

Also, New Oriental School.

How are they?

Anyone here with some insider information about what's the best school? .

My opinions on the following :

Dell ? - I Personally know the owner, and would rather be homeless and hungry than work for him, but luckily he's no longer a doctor! I know people who've worked for it/him, and they seemed fine with it.

Wall Street ?- Salary is lower than when they first started up,but seeing as they pay big bucks(ha ha!) for China/Beijing, they are a bit stuffy. It's the old stroke-the-ego( was that Superman , a WALL STREET lawyer, or an ESL FT ?) game.They didn't want me, and I didn't want them.I've heard former students speak poorly of this place.

Guobin ? I think they're located near a glue factory...4 years apart I called them about working for them...never even got to an interview; reminded me of 21 Century.The first interview for 21 Century the lass saw my credentials and was impressed, and asked ME how THEY could get contracts,and the second time they had little work. In Irish, we call these places sh.ite.

New Oriental ? Go up to Haidian and check it out. I thought it looked more like a bank. It has to come close to epitomizing China's marriage of raw and exploitive capitalism to education...Nasty. I think this very well may be where the white monkey phenomenon came from..

I worked briefly for Guobin when I first moved to Beijing and I can't say it was all that bad. I was teaching corporate classes in Banks and pretty big companies. Back then, they had a few financial issues that seemed to have been resolved by now.

The head honcho, who the institute is named after, is quite a character who speaks a few languages fluently and takes a keen interest in learning more about his teachers. They also try to organize a few outdoor getaways to promote exchange between students and teachers outside the classroom.

Their office is a bit out there in the north west side of the city but from my relatively short teaching experience here, they were one of the nicer schools I dealt with.

That's a good list that someone posted for you above.

I would start knocking on doors now. However, one thing that you might not get and that is the 8000 rmb a month salary.

Most of these universities will not pay their masters degree qualified or Ph.D teachers 8000 a month.

Salaries have been dropping the last few years. You can get 5000-6000 RMB a month for 20 hours a week which is pretty much standard.

I've been to 3 Beijing job fairs and have not seen any listings for 8000 unless they were very specialized or required the MA/Ph.D degree in support for a joint western-Chinese university program.

If you can find one, you did pretty darn good.

Try the Forestry University and Agricultural university on Xue yuan lu, both need FT's before I came back to the USA for my vacation.

BCLU needs FT's but require a Masters in Education + TESOL with and advertised whopping high end salary of 3200 a month per web page. BA/BS positions were 2800 +

I do know they had openings (of course they do with that offered pay) 3 months ago.

That pay level really stinks but the area around the school is not bad so if pay isn't a top priority and location is, that would be a good choice.

I wish they'd use a better word than "fair". A buddy, who's since run away to Singapore and I went to one of these fairs , and I was almost escorted out of the FAIR. Why you ask ? Cuz, I darn well knew that every blessed job offered there was not fair. I promised my buddy that I would take it in the proper context ,(sorry folks!), and that being as one bad stinking joke. But when I saw the foreigners looking so eager and entranced - I lost it. One joint (a place of higher edicasion) promised me 5,000 RMB and I was using full on sarcasm to amuse my friend, but it was lost on these...(will this forum allow me to name "these" ? I think not), and when they said it included a dorm....Wow! a real honest to goodness dorm. I'm sure I've seen in the mag "Better Dorms and Gardens". When I said that I had my own(bought) condo, they'd give me 1,500 in lieu of the dorm.

Not to play elitist here, but the only ones that seemed gung-ho were the Africans escaping war torn_________.
