I was talking to another Farang the other day who claimed that racism against caucasians is pretty high in Thailand. Honestly I haven't noticed as much as I did in my last job in Korea. The Koreans are viciously racist and I would have to say that the Thai's are very mild in compare if indeed they are racist at all. Any thoughts or examples that could be provided as to what exactly would constitute a Thai being racist? |

I have only ever been to Thailand, but my brother (who was an ESL teacher in both countries) would agree wholeheartedly with the statement that then Koreans were far more racist than the Thai.
He has found the Thai people to be good-humored, kind, and very accepting. He was miserable in Korea because of how he was treated and has vowed never to return. |

Anyone who can speak Thai - as can anyone who can speak Korean will notice significant racism in the population.
No big deal - it is everywhere. If you let it bother you, you will go no where.
One reason it is such a big deal in the developed Western countries is that it is so hard to deal with even with a good education and public information systems. It is hard to deal with even there, no less in places that have mediocre education systems and often uh . . . somewhat "backward" thinking about other races and peoples.
Don't worry about it - they will deal with it eventually - maybe. |

Caucasians are tolerated in Thailand because the perception is that they all have money. Just see how polite they'd be towards you if you were flat broke. |

I agree, but few cultures are very tolerant of immigrants or sojourners that are at the bottom of the food chain. Mine isn't. Is yours? |

^ I'm afraid the UK is rather too tolerant of those at the bottom of the food chain, otherwise why let so many into the country. |

Well, a recent survey of newly arrived immigrants from eatern block countries asked if the UK should change its currency and 99% said no, they were perfectly happy with the Giro! |

Thais can be very racist, but the other farangs are who you have to worry about. Some will step on anyone and do anything just to keep a job or keep their position, they will protect their stay in Thailand. |

How are the Koreans racist? What do they say? Men and women? What do they see in us?
How are the Thais racist? I am under the impression that men are rather racist because many western men steal their nice birds. How do the racist ones treat us?

Imho, Thais aren't really racist in the sense of believing that they are superior.
They are, however, very proud and usually suspicious of foreigners.
After they get to know you, you're like one of the family.

Exactly. I have spent about 2 years in Thailand and occasionally would come across other farang who would complain that Thais are racist. 'Racist' does not really describe it. 'Proud' is more accurate. |
