The trouble with the managers of this type of school - is that in Chinese eyes, they could look frightfully efficient at their jobs and get a reputation for being able to deal with the troublesome lao wai. These kind of managers are maybe hoping to rise in their careers to schools that are more recognised - and who knows what kind of mills are out on head hunting sorties looking for this kind of staff to put their own FT house in order!!!!

No thread has depicted the fiasco of ESL in China in more mythic form than this one. It remains a wonderfully imperfect explosion of genius and immaturity, in approximately equal measure....no matter what you may think of the poster Upchuckles eccentric interpretation of the demented Johnathanj, you can't take your eyes off reading his posts. Johnathanj's description is impeccable, capturing both the intimate detail and layered depth of meaning, often all in one sentence!

It is more clear than ever that JeffinFlorida and HunanForeignGuy have a profound metaphor for the entire ESL in China Experience, they are so far ahead of their time. Part satiric exaggeration, part psychological exploration, part surrealistic horror story offering a truly fascinating study of the nature of evil in man. The best thread of all time!

OP, I am curious as to whether you took this job knowing that you were being employed illegally?

That certainly does not excuse the school from not doing the right thing by you so that is not why I am asking. I am just curious as to why foreign teachers keep working for schools that employ illegally and then being surprised when the school does not act honorably.

I guess that some people have no choice as they are not able to work legally.

I suppose that others choose to work illegally as it seems more convenient at the time.

I just don't really understand why people would want to do that to themselves living in a foreign land, especially considering that some aspects of living and working in China are already so difficult.

And you also suggest that people can buy a fake "degree" on the streets of Bangkok to fulfill the university degree requirement for teaching in Japan. You even tell them where to do this and who the guy is who sells them.

And that makes him a bad guy or an unqualified teacher?

I know where all the whorehouses are in the part of Shenzhen i was living in, does that make me a JOHN?

Nope. It just makes me want to sympathize with his "plight" a LOT less.

Yes, I did know that teaching in China (or anywhere for that fact) with a tourist VISA is illegal, but I was hoping to make a quick trip to HK to fix all that, once I found employment. The employer at the time didn't care, therefore I assumed everything was taken care of. My mistake.

About the fake degree.....give me a break. Nothing wrong with helping people out who can't seem to get a break because of degree issues. Like jeffinflorida stated, it doesn't make me a bad guy whatsoever. I worked hard for my degree, but it doesn't mean I am not gonna help someone else out if they need help. Just because you are a selfish pr!cks (not to name names...ahem....upchuckles, Henry_Cowell), doesn't mean you have to look down upon anyone who goes at things in different ways. Sorry for saving the guy $50,000 worth of debt when all he wants to do is teach and travel.

OK, I agree with you 100% on this one. I am in the wrong here. But, I must say, there is a difference between lying by pretending you have a real degree, and changing people's contracts, not paying what is due, and utter bs lying. I think we can both agree that one is much more extreme than the other. If one lies about having a degree, it doesn't mean he/she is a bad teacher. If one lies about salary, hours worked, and all around contract negotiations, it does make him/her a bad/untrustworthy manager/boss.

You worked hard for your degree. And you might even have $50,000 worth of debt. But is that an example of your writing in English?? I think you should ask for your money back. Laughing

Don't get so defensive. Nobody is saying you're a bad person or a bad teacher. But please don't expect everyone to shed tears for your current plight. Smart people just don't get themselves into the situation that you did -- and then stick with it for so long and finally complain to anonymous souls on the Internet about it.

Fake diplomas...midnight runners...implied violence...hot to trot...and all the other things that have been written by the OP.

Hey, everyone, I am beginning to believe that this is a canard, a troll-on-the-loose.

When this thread first went up, I said to myself that something just didn't make sense around here.

And the more that gets written by the OP, with all of his accompanying crass, truck-driver-like vulgarity, the more I am convinced that it is a canard.

I'm not going to waste my time on this particular thread anymore. Once a canard, always a canard.
