The KFUPM beach is private to the university. When I went with my brother my wife and his wore bikinis and we wore shorts. There was no-one else there. You have to have a car as there were no buses or taxis. It was also great for bbq's etc..
My brother thinks the Director of KFUPM is a nutcase so be careful.
The job is very simple and odes not require you to think - you can be home for long lunches and enjoy life with the kids. There is a small shop on the campus and a bus goes to the co-op once a week I think!
If your wife wants to work as an English teacher - there are many schools crying out for them.
Women do not have to wear an abaya just dress conservatively with loose fitting clothes that cover the legs and arms, are not tight fitting and are not see through. It can get chilly in the evening in the winter.
My brother has loved living there for years |

Since so much emphasis is being put on having a car can someone please let me know how much a new/second hand car costs in Dhahran? I am looking for something like a Toyota Corolla or a bit less. Also what are the insurance and maintenance costs?
How difficult is it to obtain a driving license in the Kingdom for someone not having a an American or European driving license? How much it costs?
Sorry for asking so many questions. But I believe every newcomer will benefit from this information.
Thank you. |

Advice from King Cobra:
1. NEVER NEVER NEVER buy a second hand car from a Saudi, try to buy it from expat, because the majority of expat look after their cars.
2. Toyota Corolla is a small and weak car in front of the other Saudi cars, like 4x4. Go for a strong car, like Toyota or Nissan 4x4 (at least some protection for your family in case of an accident (not always true ).
3. The Saudi driving license will cost you around SR500, if you do not fail your first driving test. The Saudi test is nothing compared, for example, to UK one. |

Ask around at KFUPM or if you want something more upmarket - at Aramco next door. I second what Cobra007 says about NOT buying from a Saudi. Racist ? Maybe !
You should be able to get something okay for 10,000 SR. (US$2,600) |
