From today it is now illegal to smoke in "public" places in the U.K about time I say ,do you think it will become a full blown (opps sorry ) law to be implemented across Europe and perhaps in time even Turkey ? Comments , points of view ,are smokers becoming an endangered social group through legal reforms ? |

there's been a ban like that in Canada for years now. At first the bars and restaurants got creative by making smoking and non-smoking sections so that people could smoke in there, but that didn't last very long and it all became non smoking. I went to the mall last week in Toronto and there was a sign outside of the door that said you can't smoke within 10 meters of the outside of the mall doors. It's like that in government buildings and hospitals, etc too.
Personally I like it, because after a night at the bar I don't get home smelling like a$$.
Also, everybody has gotten used to it now, even the smokers:) |

I wish that they would do that in Turkey! A couple of times I have seen people smoking in hospitals... That is just so rude! |

I think its a great idea to outlaw smokers , its such an unhealthy and anti social habit . It really tees me off when people in this country just light up next to you without even thinking to ask if you don't mind ,like its a god given right . Because of that selfishness and an unwillingness to consider the non smoker the law has finally woken up to this issue and done the only sensible thing . Now the smokers can go some where far away from us long suffering passive smokers and kill themselves ! |

I seriously don't see how non-smokers survive in Turkey. When I lived there, friends would become miffed by the anti-smoking rule in my apartment -- To them it was plain rudeness on my part!! |

I think people stupid enough to saddle themselves with smoking-related diseases ought to be liable for some sort of tax. In this way, governments would double the revenue from sales of tobacco-related products. Yes, a tax on lung-cancer, on heart-disease and bronchitis. Lets say, 30% in the pound. The revenue generated could go towards research and treatment. |

Ollie, the title of your thread is wrong. As of July 1st it is now illegal to smoke in public places in England. The same law was applied in Scotland ages ago. Like the poll tax, Scotland was the testing ground. On my last visit home in Aprilish I was in a few bars and totally loved the non smoke atmosphere.... and I smoked for heavily for 20 years. |

Even though I smoke, I too wouldn't mind seeing the ban here, though we all know that it would hardly be enforced. If they can't enforce traffic laws, why would they bother with smoking? It's really just not necessary to be able to light up wherever the mood strikes. I started smoking SOOO much more when I came to Turkey, and I can't imagine how hard it must be to quit here.
I banned smoking inside my house because of the baby and it's so much nicer and cleaner. Even still, a few days after he was born, one of the aunties lit up in my kitchen, and then had the gall to b*tch that it was cold outside when my husband asked her not to do that. The visiting men all b*tched too that they weren't allowed to smoke while they got drunk and argued loudly in my living room (visiting me and the baby was clearly just a peripheral reason for being there...). |

has anyone ever been in a dolmus in the middle of rush-hour and had somebody light up? Yeah, that is what I call justifiable homicide. |

I've only seen the drivers light up.
The best is when they stop for gas, and leave the engine running while they fill up, then light a cigarette. Now that's thinking! |

Can;t wait to go to the U.K and walk into a restaurant or bar without the lingering stench of stale tobacco ,one of the reasons I don't use those places over here that much . |

A lone voice in the wilderness...I quite like having a cigarette after dinner. Quite happy to smoke on a terrace, or in a room away from non-smokers, think it's quite right that I can't in airports, hospitals, etc etc. But I would still like to have a cigarette after my dinner please. |
