No problem, it's been known to happen on this board.
Seriously, I think you are asking the wrong crowd. You want to get a reputable, quick source for J-Pop, go to the source: your Japanese friends, students, colleagues. Ask them for their "top 10" of all time... then compare and contrast.
Asking a bunch of gaijin about J-Pop, is akin to Japanese asking each other about the best cricket stars of all time, or the great Detla blues standards. Although, markle is a keen J-pop enthusiast, so his suggestions seem to merit close attention. |

| I agree with the other posters who said it depends on your age. I think it also depends on your musical taste. Those songs the OP listed may or may not be quintessential pop songs but I think they are all pretty horrible. I don't like any of them. If you're looking for a soundtrack to your video collage, why don't you just choose a song you like? It's pointless having music you don't like in your video, even if it is quintessential, because afterall, you're going to have to watch it! What J-pop songs did you like when you were here? |

Yes, I had to rethink a few things based on what the OP stated. The OP seems to be referring to classic songs, so older artists might be preferable. Check out some tracks from Hide and X Japan. Ayumi Hamazaki's star has faded a bit, but she was very popular with some of her earlier work, and she still has a number of fans.

I have to agree with this part of azarashi sushi's post. Why would it make a difference if the songs are classic, etc. as long as you like the songs. |

Quintessential eropop: Koda Kumi
Quintessential effete boys: SMAP
Quintessential paedo-pop: Morning Musume
Quintessential enka: Kitajima Saburo
Quintessential nonsmoker: Ayumi Hamasaki
Take your pick.
If you want to like the music that you post on your site then you may prefer someone a bit more talented. I would suggest Love Psychedelico. They are at least respectable. |

BTW: markle's choice of Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence was also a good one.
Not J-Pop as such, as he said, but quintessentially Japanese for sure.
Bravo sir. |

I was just thinking, the quintessential J-pop song from 2002 might've been Can You Keep a Secret? (Hikaru Utada). Or is it just because my Sri Lankan neighbors used to play that on repeat from 5:30 in the morning until 12:30 at night? Hmmm...
I think I liked an ELT song for about six days (went like, "itsumo sou tanjun de..."). It might've been the theme song for Shin Hoshi no Kinka, which for some completely inexplicable reason I was addicted to.
Quite frankly, I would say the SAKANA SAKANA SAKANA song that they used to play in the supermarkets--please say they no longer do--pretty much sums up Japanese pop for me. The cd sold tons of copies, oy vey. |

This song makes me both annoyed and hungry for sashimi at the same time. I even confess to still humming it long after leaving Japan, especially when wandering thru the fish section at my Canadian supermarket. Damn, I'm humming it right now, damn you ! |

I've never actually heard the real song but I often find myself humming it as well because my wife sings it so much. Usually when she wants to eat fish. Or sees a fish. Or is thinking of fish. Which makes up for about 90% of the time. |

I like Namie Amuro, she can really sing, but she's not that popular now, getting married and having a baby will do that to you . |

Yeah, but I actually thought she got a lot hotter after having the kid though (i.e. now)... more like a real woman. Anyway, at her peak I think she was way more popular than any other j-pop star was. |
