does one need to have a MA to teach at Istanbul University?
Further, is it far too late to be applying to university teaching positions, or private schools too for that matter, for the upcoming school at this point (early July)? When is the usual hiring season? I see that some colleges start the hiring process as early as February. |

No, this is a 3rd world country and the students who attend university are ilitarate anyway, with an estimated IQ around 20. So if you can speak English, come from a "1st world country" can read and write and are just a tiny bit smarter they'll take you on. |

Dagi, you are being naughty. It is a good uni with good students and considered one of the best in the country- especially the law faculty. However, as a teacher the salary sucks. |

Didn't really mean to comment on the standard of the uni!
I just love those posts where people say they don't have the qualifications and despite the lack of them want to know whether they can teach at XY.
It's a university, imho the least the students deserve is someone with an M.A. e.g. proper qualifications and experience. |

Illiterate is spelt i-l-l-i-t-e-r-a-t-e, describes a person who is unable to read or write or a person who lacks knowledge or awareness in general; uneducated or unsophisticated, probably someone like who has posted the above message. |

1. Sarcasm, ever heard of it?
2. English is not my mother tongue.
3. I don't teach EFL, so who cares about my spelling errors.
4. Picking on someone's spelling errors isn't much better, either. |

Thanks for the insight and sorry to offend you...
I just finished my MPH and am supposed to begin my DrPH global health in the fall but really would like a break from school for a year and think more international experience would be valuable. My mother tongue is English but I speak Arabic and took 2 semesters of Turkish as an undergrad, so I was looking for a way to get back to the region as my field work was solely in Africa while an MPH student.
So I'm sorry to offend, I was just looking for a way to get back there for a yr, gain the experience, and contribute. I realize without an MA in Ed I will be limited and that is fair. I do have TEFL certification so I suppose I will continue to look into language schools. Thanks, though, for the harsh answer.

With those qualifications, it's still worth applying for universities... |

Uncle Sam needs people with your qualifications and experience. Kirkuk, Suleimaniyah, Basra.
It is your patriotic duty to offer your services before it is too late. |

No, I have never heard of Sarcasm, but I've heard of Sarkozy, the p.rick who has become the President of France. Has this Sarcasm got any relations with Sarkozy?
There are lots of people who can read and write well in English, although English is not their mother tongue, eg. Salman Rushdie, Tariq Ali, or even perhaps Jack Kerouac, the best American novelist imho! |

white_silk, with your background, isn't there a a possibility for you to something that is related to the field? Maybe the Piece Corps or some volunteer work in the area? Or do you have to make money while taking a year off?
Have you heard of VSO? They need all kinds of people and your expertise could be in demand there as well. They don't pay that much, but it's an organisation that won't ask you to pay thousands of pounds to be their volunteer.
comrade in arms: maybe, but I am not a writer either and don't want to be one. Besides that I probably am fluent in more languages than you are and what the heck is wrong with Sarkozy? I think he rocks! |
