| Did it put a quick halt to the war? Of course. Could this have been achieved in a way so as to spare the deliberate targetting of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians? |
How?

| If there were huge military forces building up then why not drop nuclear bombs on them? |
It's not that easy to drop bombs on hugely massed military forces. They tend to want to shoot back. Considering the US had spent immense resources to construct this new technology, they probably didn't want it shot down or captured.

Japan needed to be convinced to surrender.

| Would you advocate the use of nuclear weapons to bring about a quick resolution to other conflicts? |
A lot has been learned about radiation and cancer that wasn't known then. Also, the bombs of today are immensely more powerful. So no, a nuke attack is not a good idea for current conflicts.

How about rush hour traffic? How about Fox News?

| Would Hitler have been right to have nuked New York and London if he'd had the capability to bring a quick end to the war? |
Yes.

| The question we have to ask ourselves is how much evil must be done to do good? |
Well, it ended WWII and and the threat of mutual annihilation kept the US and the USSR from going to war shortly thereafter. |

You're forgeting that there were munitions factories in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Now Tokyo being fire bombed had less rational reasons beyond trying to discourage the civilian population from supporting the war (and causing some problems for the fire fighters). |

The million dollar question that all the "peace activist" types seem not to be able to answer is this;
How could the war have been ended in a way to minimize both civilian casualties in Japan AND Allied casualties?
There really is no answer. The options I have heard are;
a/ wait for Japan to collapse.
Good idea, unless you are Chinese and living in land occupied by the IJA. Approximately 200,000 civilians a month were dying in those areas. If the allies waited 5 months, it would consign a million innocent civilians in Allied lands to death.
b/ blockade Japan and force surrender.
Good idea, unless you are a Japanese civilian. THe military would requisition all food in the country, and the civilian population would bear the brunt of any shortages. How many civilians would starve to death before the IJA surrendered?
It is also worth remembering that Hirohito, in his surrender speech, took pains to SPECIFICALLY mention the use of atomic weapons as a primary reason he gave up. Otherwise, the hard line militants in the Japanese cabinet would have kept fighting until the bitter end. As it was, a large group wanted to keep fighting even after Nagasaki, and even after the Soviets entered the war. There was nearly a coup in fact after Hirohito made his decision.
There is no easy way to end a war. SOmetimes you have to stomp the enemy's guts out. |
