i have just returned from south america. i found it to be very nice with many oppurtunities. just no stable work or health insurance. im broke back in america working to save for the next exodus. i have been applying with corps in japan and taiwan. just needed some advice on which would be better for someone like me. not trying to spend a lot(of course) to get there and get set up. by the way, i have a b.a. in business and no tefl cert. taiwan seems to be a better choice b/c of lower cost of living and similar wages to japan. any advice would be appreciated

You can save more in Taiwan - but the environment in most places in Taiwan is pretty horrible - pollution, more pollution. crazy scooter traffic, and generally boring environment and people.

Japan is much cleaner, nicer and less polluted. If you can get a job in Japan, I would go there, despite the lower savings, as the quality of life in Japan is much higher compared with Taiwan.

I am now in Korea, and I would place Korea half way between Taiwan and Japan, but definetely better than Taiwan.

any advice? mmm....

There are so many factors which will come into play, both professionally and personally, that it is almost impossible to compare the 2 countries with regards to TEFLing...I think that Taiwan is the better bet right now.

Which "corps" are you applying to? NOVA is a no-go these days, as you may already realize.

Yes, I agree.

1. Japan
2. Korea
.

.
3 Taiwan

Japan, if you have enough start-up cash or can get an advance from your school, is the place to get established for EFL.

Korea a 2nd in that, if you're in Seoul, you can save a lot of money and still live in a reasonably interesting, exciting city with choices.

Taiwan is just a dirty little dud, all way around..

Avoid Taiwan and focus on Japan and, if that doesn't work out, then, Korea.

But you don't want to be in the sticks in either Japan or Korea.

Best to stick to the cities with all the amenities.

The beaches in Taiwan are 'beep' - you are picking the wrong country if you want to go there for a beach experience.

I don't think Taiwan is THAT bad. I'll have to get back down there and check it out.

I've been in Korea for years, and Seoul is a great place for me. Too many years here, and I'd like to check out either Taiwan or Japan for the living experience.
