Okay, guys. Let�s have it. Which store in Mexico City or in your region of Mexico do you find the most used literature in English. Let�s hear the drums roll on this one.

Thelmadatter took me to some used-book stores all right close to each other in Mexico City. She'll have to tell you where. That was the best selection I've seen.

I go scrounging through the lending shelf at the only local Irish pub, or visit a couple of scruffy used bookstores a couple of hours down the road in Puerto Escondido.

Try contacting your local British/US/Canadian/Australian/South African/New Zealand (have I forgotten anyone? Smile

) Embassy. If they're anything like here they'll have fairly frequent used book sales.

...it's where Gary said, the street behind (north of) the Cathedral The used bookstore stretch runs from about a block east of the Cathedral, all the way westwards to Eje Central (where Bellas Artes is). The street is called Donceles most of the way; east of the Cathedral it's Justo Sierra. The metro stations are Allende and Zocalo. The majority of the bookstores are on the north side of Donceles, but there are a couple of good ones on the south.

It's interesting to see the literary mix, consisting, I suppose, of what expats discard. Quite different from what you find in used bookstores in English-speaking countries, at least in my experience. Last year on one book hunt, I found two old friends that I had read 30 years ago and never seen since.

No, that isn't the place, but it sounds great. I'll have to check it out next time I'm in the city. We were over someplace else where they have an antiques street fair on the weekend. Colonia Roma I think.

I just visited that antique street fair in Roma, on Alvaro Obregon...though there are few vendors out. Saturday and Sunday...

Check out this web site I just discovered:

The idea is, you register your book and get a bookcrossing ID number. Then you leave it somewhere and register where you left it and any one can pick it up, log into the web site say they read the book and where they are dropping it off next.

A great idea and people are doing it world wide.

I love bookcrossing, but unfortunately the hinterland of Mexico doesn't see much action!
I dropped a few books in the US several years ago, but never got word that they had been found.

Luckily my school has hundreds of books that teachers have left over the years, I've read about a half of them, so I see have plenty of reading material ahead of me.

The bookstores jillford is referring to are in Colonia Roma near the intersection of Jalapa and Obregon if memory serves... (right now Im "suffering" in Zihuatanejo on vacation, you know... swimming, toasting myself, drinking, feeding the fishes that are around my feet in the water.... its tough but someone�s got to do it!)

Another one is called "Cazalibros" Actually, its a charity thing run by a Protestant church (cant remember which flavor of Protestant) way up Reforma 18-hundred something.... nearest cross-street is Montes Apalaches past all the houses of people who have more money than Ill ever see in my lifetime. They have limited hours but I know they are open on Saturdays from about 10 am to about 1 pm. They are listed in the phone book somewheres. The lady who is always there on Sat mornings is really nice and interesting to talk to. This place also has the best prices by far.

Anyone know if these places sell new books too, or only used ones? Where's the best place to go for new releases?

I rarely see new English language books for sale outside of the airport. Sandborns usually has a small rack of them though.

In Mexico City there is an English-language bookstore for technical/engineering/computer/architecture-type things that I cannot remember the name of right this minute. They also have a small selection of contemporary literature and classics. The store is in the centro historico next to the Starbucks that is located on the pedestrian only street one-ish block east from the Palacio de Bellas Artes. This is not the pedestrian street closest to the Zocalo (Motolinia). Geez, maybe someone can help me out here. I've got two maps with conflicting street names, so I can't figure out the name of the street. Lonely Planet says it is Condessa.
