Just thought I'd add - for the benefit of the majority of contributers to this board who have barely spoken to a Saudi women in their lives - that most of the young Saudi women I work with say they would not drive even if they were allowed to do so. They also point out that in other Gulf countries such as the UAE or Qatar, relatively few women drive even though they are legally free to do so.

Of course, that is not to say that those women who would like to drive should not be given the option to do so, simply that, as far as most Saudi women seem to be concerned, the driving ban is not the burning issue many expats and foreign 'journalists' consider it to be. Same goes for that other obsession of foreigners - "the veil".

Couldn't agree more! Even if it were demonstrated that 99% of Saudi ladies had no wish to drive, why shouldn't the other 1% do so?

Of course, if any of you have read the famous book Sperm Wars, you'll read the scary statistic that 2/3 (66%) of all children born are from a different father than the one on the birth certificate!

The figure is absurd. The highest figures I have ever seen quoted have been around 30%, from research in one English village and from the statistics as a result of paternity tests.

The trouble with the figure of 30% is that the sample suffers from what is known as selection bias. Fathers will only ask for a paternity test if they are suspicious of their paternity. Those that are not won't enter the sample.

There has been some work on this, and a reasonable adjusted proportion would be between 5-10%.

The figures of 66% is statistically wrong, and medically unproven!

It seems the British government is planning to make the registration of fathers' names on birth certificates compulsory.

The problem is that everyone knows who to send a card to on Mother's Day, but not everybody knows who to send a card to on father's day. Laughing

Wait and see!

This may well have been pointed out to you already but I feel you are a touch misinformed as regards your reference to Scottish fans (especially abroad).

Whilst Scottish football fans went through their own period of hooliganism, this has been a thing of the past for quite some time (over 10 years). There was only really a few club teams who had small sections of supporters that went abroad to cause trouble; most of the Scottish trouble makers made their bones at home and certainly the national team never had the problem. You will find that Scottish football fans have an excellent reputation as some of the friendliest and least aggressive in the world.

It certainly seems that, more often than not, the countries who are temporarily invaded with any form of Tartan Army welcome them with open arms. These can be full scale invasions where the invaders completely outnumber the locals and do their best to drink as much of the locals' alcohol as is possible, yet instances of these 'lower-working class social groups' getting violent are extremely rare indeed.
