Those working in language mills usually get nothing but one day for Christmas, one day for New Year, maybe two weeks for Spring Festival, three days for May 1 and three days for October 1.

Those of us working in public schools get a month for winter, a month for summer, and a week each for May 1 and October 1. Of course, the summer breaks and winter breaks can vary from less than a month long to two months long depending on the school's schedule. My current (and soon former) school's summer break this year is only three weeks long.

It depends from school to school. Many schools pay full salary for the months off, plus about 2000 RMB annual travel allowance. Some pay for days you actually work.

Some universities will pay you for July and August IF you're coming back for a second year. However, most seem to operate on a 10-month contract basis, so you get paid from September through June and then you're on your own for a couple of months.

Um,my first contract was for ten but this one is for 12. Two months clear off plus a month where I only teach one 40 minute class a day. Another month where half my students are away doing a practicum. I also get public holidays. Time off also when exams are on and so on.

If you are coming back for a second year at the same school make sure you negotiate for July and August to be paid. Don't accept "your new contract begins in September, so we will not pay you for July and August" Even if you can get one month, that is better than nothing. If they don't budge, look elsewhere.
