There was an article from transitionsabroad.com dated about 2002 or so in which the teacher, a non-EU citizen, entered on a tourist visa got a job and then had her tourist visa extended for the length of the contract without having to go back to her home country. Is this still the case? Or there any countries within the EU that follow similar procedures or is the universal rule that you have to go back and wait for the work visa to be processed in your home country?

The 'universal' rule is that non-EU member citizens can't get work visas for the 'older' EU member countries regardless of procedures - not as EFL teachers.

I am suspecting that the person in question may have landed a job in another field, such as with a US -based company operating a branch in Portugal - or may be an urban myth altogether.

Many of the 'new' EU member countries still have laws and procedures similar to the one you've described.

The article's actually 2000; perhaps things have changed.

On a tangent. It seems as though Berlitz considers Americans to meet the minimum work regulation requirements for Germany, but it's certainly 'Old Europe' (?)

All a bit confusing really

Appreciate the help

Germany has recently tightened the laws regarding non-EU citizens. You'll find in-depth info on the Germany forum.

Anyway, I recommend research through the Portugese Embassy website, where you are much more likely to find current legal information.
