I loved this comment from The New York Times http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/20/world/europe/20turkey.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

Any reaction to the results? I'm content to give the AKP another term and see how things develop. Pity about the growth of MHP.

Will there now be a referendum to grant a popular vote of the president or is that an impasse?

PS Had a most enjoyable election day when Ayvalik returned to normal with all the rich Istanbulus and Izmirlis going home to vote. My favourite cafe/bar proprietors even got a day off.
Can we do this more often?

Last week, I took a week off and decided to spend a few days on the Aegean coast of Turkey with a friend of mine. We didn't have reservations so we wanted to stay at one of the hotels that looked reasonable. The proprietor of the hotel wanted to see our marriage certificate! I told him that we didn't have one, because we weren't married. He said that it was a requirement by the AKP controlled belediye (the local council).

As you may have heard that Prime Minister Erdogan is trying to make adultery a crime. If that happened, what kind of punishment would we get (she's married to someone else, you see)? Stoning to death like in Saudi Arabia? And the US of America is a strong supporter of the Saudi Arabia. This is what they want here, don't they? Moderate Islam and all that bulls.hit. My a.rse! No, they aren't going to get that. They haven't done their homework properly.

Democracy is a joke!

In 2003, before it started, millions of people demonstrated in London and in other cities against the Iraq war. All the decent people in Britain I came across at that time opposed to this horrible crime against the humanity but to no avail. The deal had already been done between Bush and his puppy British Prime Minister. No matter what millions of people wanted, no matter how many hundreds of thousands of people would have died, it had to be carried out.

Has this geezer got any connection with Dogus University, Doga Koleji, English Time or Fetullah Gulen by any chance?

That's an interesting thought. Do you think this guy's wife is a "parrothead" (no offense to jimmy buffet) or a black moving object?
