Does anyone know of any recruiters that specialize in placing teachers in Hong Kong? Is it hard to get work in Hong Kong as a newbie? I've heard different things. |

Hard as hell for me to find anything. But I'm ABC....... I think if you're white you'll have an easier time. If you're anything more ethnic then best of luck to you. |

Pardon my ignorance, but what does "ABC" mean?
I am white. I'm just trying to find names of recruiters for Hong Kong. I'm getting my CELTA in August and would ideally like to go to Hong Kong, though I'll be looking in Taiwan and here in the States as well.
Do you know the name of any recruiters or people I might contact in Hong Kong? |

Jrwilheim, ABC is American Born Chinese. Unfortunately, Mechanized is right about ABCs being overlooked when it comes to teaching ESL or EFL in Hong Kong. There is a degree of reverse discrimination, in which Chinese parents refuse to even consider a Chinese face as a viable English teacher or tutor. We have three Chinese sons, all adopted in Hong Kong, all native English speakers and native Cantonese speakers, and they have faced this reverse discrimination time after time.
As for your original question:

it probably depends on what level you are wanting to teach. I used to be approached several times a year about teaching at various levels, but then I live here. The majority of requests come from kindergartens. The people asking me are not really recruiters, but teachers who happen to know me or know about me. Sorry that I can't put you in touch with recruiters. Good luck. |
