... and ruminations thereof. Been getting stuck in it a lot lately. The AKP-contolled belediye, in all its wisdom, has been tearing up and re-tearing up the same bits of E5 between Bakırky and Avcılar for about 3 years now. The latest improvement are some nonsensical lane fence-like things which appear unpredicatably and trap you in a lane, keeping you from exiting where you might have wanted. These fences seem to change place weekly. What a good idea!

Stuck in traffic this Saturday, I saw one of those guys selling simit on a stick, and got to wondering who the hell buys traffic simit? Sunbaked and stale, with a fine coating of burnt petrol and road grime... Yummy!

I wish they'd change the law that says you can't move your car after an accident. How infuriating, after being stuck in traffic for ages, to find the cause is a tiny fender bender, with several guys milling about ranting on their cell phones waiting for the accident inspector guy!

A couple years back they were doing some construction that involved a months-long manipulation of road width. Over time, the traffic jam there got so bad that even the legless beggars joined the flower and water sellers, humping along between stopped cars. Their womenfolk set up tea and picnics on the median (because that's a very beautiful place for a picnic), while their children darted back and forth across the highway on the other side where cars were travelling at normal speed, save for people slowing down to have a look at the traffic. Rubbernecking is also a really annoying traffic cause. It's even more infuriating when the cause of traffic is people slowing down to look at the minor fender bender on the other side. People slow waaaaaaay down here. How many times have we almost gotten in an accident because of some dipsh*t up ahead slamming on his breaks to look at a stalled car on the other side?

Then there are those giant waffle cookie-like things they sell in traffic jams. My husband claims they're very delicious, but I've never tried one. I've never bought anything in traffic. But it occured to me that I've never seen these waffle cookie things being sold anywhere else but in traffic.

My son is whacking himself on the head with a diaper. Whenever we're stuck in traffic, he cries. If theres no traffic, he sleeps.

The funniest traffic ever was out near Ambarlı, where, for some reason, a bunch of tranny hookers decided it was good place to ply their trade. There's virtually nothing by the side of the road in Ambarlı except Petrol Ofisi, and that's where the hookers were near. They got a lot of burly truck driver business. I often wondered if those drivers knew they weren't real ladies. But it wasn't so much the johns that were causing the traffic, it was everyone slowing down to look at the hookers. It got worse and worse over the ensuing months till eventually the police came and ran them off. Not because they were hookers, but because they were causing a traffic problem. It was on the news and everything.
