Hello all,
My girlfriend and I are planning on moving to Japan in the Fall/Winter. We both have Master's degrees (mine in Engineering and hers in Classics) from US universities, and both have some teachin and tutoring experience in ESL, bu tno ESL certification. The question is, how do we go about relocating to Japan (for at least 1 - 3 years) as an unmarried couple? I have asked one school (AEON), and they cannot guarantee that we would be in the same city, much less within daily commuting distance...
What are our options?
Thanks in advance! |

One option is for one of you to get a job (and a visa) with a big eikaiwa in a big city and for the other to come on a dependants visa. On the dependents visa you can legally work up to 20 hours a week part-time and you can even potentially any more than your partner as part-time pay rates are better. The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs has an English language web-site that will explain the visas to you.......whoops just saw the unmarried part......mmmmm, maybe time to get a ring on that finger |

I know for a fact that Nova has no problem accepting couples, and I have unmarried and married friends that were placed by Interac. Also, the jobs section on Dave's ESL cafe is also a good place to source Jobs. Unfortunately living with your partner in Japan and not being married is still seen as rather decadent, but not impossible to deal with (take it from one who knows!). |

My boyfriend and I are going to Japan with Peppy Kids Club. They have no problem with the fact that we want to live together and that we are not married. They can give us jobs in the same city. They seem to be a reputable school (more so than NOVA). Check them out! |

My now-husband and I worked for an eikawa called MIL in Chiba-ken. They usually hire in spring and fall, and like to hire couples, since couples tend to be more stable and save them on housing costs.
Look for their ads on the Cafe.

Hello All,
Thanks for all your replys. We have an interview with ECC in May. They seem to be o.k. with us going as a couple, but they , of course, don't guarantee that we will both get hired... I suppose we will cross that bridge when we get there.
Thaks again,
M |
