Hello, its been a little while since I was checking this site, but recently I graduated with a general economics degree to go along with the honours in History that I completed in 2005, now I would like to find a job teaching english in Japan with my two degrees. I was born in Canada I am 40 yrs old and I don't have any expereince teaching and I would like to get at least a work visa and hopefully accomodation before I travel there. What shoud I do?
Thanks in advance, James.

Start by reading the 4 FAQ stickies above and the links within.
Then, make a plan of when and specifically where you want to come here. Your background is pretty much a generic one for most newbies.
Then, decide whether you can afford to support yourself while you come here and wait to get hired and get that first paycheck (1-3 months), or whether you should stay at home and look for work in Japan from there (cheaper but more limited).
At your age, the JET program may still look at you, as their age cutoff of 40 is admittedly somewhat flexible, but I wouldn't put all my eggs in just that one basket. Besides JET, entry level work includes dispatch agency ALT work and eikaiwa, so look into those.
The rest is up to you and the interviews. |
