|
|
I was wondering what the situation was with availability of health clubs gym facilities in the average cities throughout Mexico. It is important that I have access to weights and treadmill if possible.
Any information of terms of membership (time, cost, etc.) and generally availability of equipment would be appreciated.
Also, if it fair to expect that there be at least one gym or health club available in most cities? |

Can't speak for smaller towns, but in DF you'll find every manner of club and gym. Other posters have noted that they are more expensive than gyms in the US. Those closest to where I live run between 40 and 500 dollars per month, with varying levels of service and modern equipment. The sole 500 usd per month club I know of had some attractive and scantily clad women in the lobby, so it might have doubled as another type of club. Might have...
Spinning and Tae-Bo seem big these days... |

Any chance that there may be places which charge by the day (for when I am passing through to my final destination)? And if so, how much should I expect to pay? I am just looking for simple facilities. |

Again, speaking only about Mexico City, you'll find daily and weekly rates....let me check tomorrow at one particular place I know to quote you something. |

The gym closest to the Plaza Grande in Merida cost 400 pesos per month and the one at the Merida fiesta americana was 1000. The latter had a sauna, whirlpool, outdoor swimming pool, universal, treadmill, weights...that was about it. |

Found a nice little club today. Small, new equipment, clean inside...400 pesos per month, or 40 pesos per visit. I didn't get to see what the lockers or showers were like, and the woman manning the desk certainly wasn't there for any additional services. This place was in artsy Roma Norte. Cheaper than I expected for the area.
Passing by again later, I heard a lot of grunting. |

I'm pleased to say that in small cities it's cheaper. In Zamora, Michoacan it was about 200 P a month, a bit more if you want to include pilates and in your package deal. A modest gym but definitely has weights, treadmills, though I heard there is sometimes a lineup for it. 20 P per day.
Can I say spinning is HUGE in Mexico!
And it seems like even in small towns there are at least 5 martial arts schools, even in Zamora a city with very little diversity in those kinds of activities. For example, there were only 2 yoga studios I know of, 2 ballet schools, 1 theatre (which is still not really open). |
