I'm thinking about teaching in Asia, but could use some advice. I taught for Nova in Japan a few years ago and hated it so much I quit after 3 months. Hanging out in Kyoto was fun, but I found the teaching dull and felt really isolated. I taught in a small town and was bored stiff. Lately, however, I have contemplated teaching in either South Korea or Vietnam. I am in a life situation where I really need to get some money saved and my corporate cubicle job here isn't working for that. I am also probably going to get laid off/downsized within the next six months, yet again.....I do like Asian culture and find I am happiest in a very urban environment where there is a lot to see and do. Complicating factors are that I'm in my forties and also, I'm gay. I am the type of gay guy that Americans have pegged within five minutes of conversation, however, cultural cues in different countries are not the same, and it wasn't an issue in Japan. In fact, some of my female students flirted heavily with me and others found it strange that I wasn't married with kids at my age.
I'm wondering if there is an Asian country where I would fit in best as a gay, older teacher and that has a large city with the excitement and diversity I crave: good restaurants, shops, bars, etc.

What about Thailand ? So, are you... say on the..umm flaming side ? No real need to be butch. Thailand comes to mind when I think of liberalized sexuality, though it's mostly a trans-gender issue. Vietnam ? Not sure, but I'm strait, so what would I know... The pay is much better.

Sir Tom of J of 888:

you need : money, urban energy, acceptance of gay lifestyles, job opportunities for older teachers (I assume that you have some credential/qualifications).

I also assume that you have researched this on gay/lesbian travel sites? They will know more than I about some things.

In my hetero opinion: You will be hard pressed to get exactly what you desire. however: Taipei is fairly accepting of GLBT lifestyles - more so, I think, than other Chinese societies. There are jobs here. There are loads of things to do here. You can save some money if you follow a moderate budget.

That will be the place to start your new career....in my opinion.

I think you can go to Thailand and try Philippines, since these countries are less conservative and more open to homosexuals.

The OP wrote that he needed to save some money.

Unless you were promoting Thailand and the Flipping Islands as holiday destinations... Smile
