Has anyone here tried bathing in the Black Sea? Or does anyone have any info about the water quality.
I live about halfway along Turkey's Black Sea coast and the weather is right for swimming. I see Turks swimming but I can't help suspecting the Black Sea is heavily polluted, being an enclosed body of water. Info I have found online confirms my suspicions but it is a few years out of date.
Unfortunately when I was in the UK in very close proximity to lovely blue flag beaches, the weather was too foul to take advantage. I would like to go swimming at least once this summer |

Have you seen anyone with nasty skin infections from swimming in there? If not, it's probably okay. I thought of this because I've known people here to get some pretty awful looking things from swimming in the Bosphorus and public pools.
I mean, of course the Black Sea is horribly polluted, probably with things like oil and heavy metals that have a worrying long-term affect. On the other hand, you probably eat the fish from there, so why swelter and miss your chance to swim? |

The Bulgarian Black Sea coast is frequented by thousands of tourists - many from health-obsessed cultures like Scandinavia, Germany and Britain.
Incidentally if anyone wants to stay in a Bed and Breakfast place only 80 km from the Bulgarian Black Sea - contact me ! |

Yes, I think I will risk it. My husband has never had any ill effects from swimming. However, he is made of strong stuff. He drinks the tap water in our office, heats and reheats food many times and cooks chicken from frozen.
I have already had constant stomach problems in Turkey so I don't think my system is quite acclimatised. On the other hand I don't want to be obsessive and over cautious and as JustMe says, I do eat the fish.
That reminds me we bought some delicious stuffed mussels last winter and an hour or two afterwards we felt so strange, really disorientated and giddy. |

Hmmm. Maybe that big LSD spill in the Black Sea?
I too had an iffy tummy for the 1st few months I was here. Americans (Brits too?) are rather slavish about food safety in restaurants, which of course I don't object to, but I think it makes us weak when we go to other places. But you'll toughen up, don't worry. |

Gone are the days when the best way to physically prepare for a swim across the Golden Horn was to dunk your head down a toilet ... |
