I've heard that if you buy a ticket for Japan, customs doesn't like it if you don't have a return ticket. I've contacted some companies so far but it is not clear yet that I will have a job when I get there (best scheduled time for me would be sept. 1st). So I want to buy a return ticket so I don't get yelled at by customs. Do you think that 2 months is enough time to find a job, etc, get my ticket credited?

Or is there a better way?

The two times I have come to Japan I have arrived without a return ticket and had no problems at all at immigration. My wife is Sri Lankan (one of the least desirable passports on the planet) and she also had no problem.

I personally wouldn't worry too much about a return ticket if your only concern is incurring the wrath of an airport official.

The amount of time it takes to get a job depends very much on what you have to offer ie teaching experience, qualifications, how you come across in interviews etc. If you tick all the right boxes you could get a job in no time if not you may find it more difficult but I am sure you will find something.

Good luck

When I have come to Japan on a one-way ticket the check-in staff at Auckland airport have checked my passport to make sure I have a visa which allows me to come in on a one-way ticket (working visa in that case).
Airlines can be subject to penalties apparently if Japan Immigration refuses to let you in. Some people report no problems with a one-way ticket, other people have said they did have problems. It could be a bit of a gamble.
