Hi Friends-
I joined Daves about three weeks ago, and have really enjoyed reading your conversations, and especially appreciated all the people who have contributed to threads Ive started on the LA, China and CIS/Russia forums especially those who have sent PMs and followed up with advice and help. After over a year of exchanging letters with Ministries and Rectors, I got suddenly excited by the energy of the people on this website, and even thought I might find the right university job in Ukraine (or other CIS), Mexico, Costa Rica, Peru, or China as early as this month or September!
Some of you know that Im in a unique situation, with a few advanced degrees and lots of uni teaching experience (Speech and Oral English, Writing, and Theatre), and that I need to make enough beyond essential living expenses to send house payments home to America. My wife is a uni ESL teacher too. Thanks in part to your great and generous advice, Im backing off and realizing that it might take a little more time, perhaps making trips to the countries Im interested in, development of relationships with DOEs and Chairs, etc. Im even considering a trip to Mexico in late September to a convention of ESL uni professors, thanks to a heads-up from MELEE.
Im hoping that you will keep my situation in mind if you hear of chairs or professorships in the unis near you. But in the meantime, Ill expect to visit all of you at Daves regularly.
I thought you might like to have the names and addresses of the five major websites I use in looking for uni jobs in and outside of America. Theyre all free, and some of them also have colleges and high schools listed too, as well as jobs in the private and public sector. You might consider surfing them to see if theres anything that might be useful to you.
Happy Trails, and thanks again!
Doug
Jobs in Research, Science, Academic and Related Professions (All Levels!)
With sections on the UK and Ireland, European Universities and Colleges, and Other Worldwide Universities and Colleges:
jobs.ac.uk/clients/browse/euro I LOVE this site!
The Times Higher Education and University Jobs International (Worldwide):
tesjobs.co.uk/ This has jobs for ALL levels.
Jobs From the Chronicle of Higher Education:
chronicle.com/jobs/100/100 This is a great site too, with occasional Asian listings.
The Chronicle of Higher Education:
higheredjobs.com/ Mostly North America, but lots of good listings.
Southern California HERC (Higher Education Recruitment Consortium)
socalherc.org/home/index.cfm?site_id=761 Very good list, but just unis from Southern California.
I also use a couple of area-specific sites (in Theatre, mostly), which cost about $90 US a year, and will happily share these with anyone as well.
Thanks again for sharing your hard-earned experience, and happy (job) hunting!
Doug
p.s. Im posting this on the General, the LA, China and European Forums. Sorry about the redundance. |

try also, seriousteachers.com
or, sounds you should go to the recruitment fairs in Miami, NewYork, etc...that's where all the Intl schools come to find certified teachers. There are a handful of Uni jobs in LA that pay well,...but, in general Univ jobs pay very little in LA, especially Argentina.
I just saw another ad the other day for Georgetown Univ Fellows program, that requires a MA , but pays $30k in Chile? Of course, this is only a 1 year Fellow program... |
