Where do you go to get a great cup of the brown stuff in Tokyo? I dont mean buying it in a pack from a supermarket but ordering a cup and sitting down for a few moments and just relaxing.

My recommendation? Freshness Burger do this MIND BLOWING blend called Organic coffee. It'll have you bouncing off the ceiling! Other than here, where do you recommend...? There is also a movie theater in Kawasaki that does a re-e-e-e-e-e-eally good blend...but I'm keeping THAT baby to myself....

Much as I hate to say I would always go to Starbucks. The novelty of sitting on a comfy sofa and the free wireless internet got me everytime. Also it's no smoking. Going into Doutor was like walking into some kind of chemical experiment.

At the Starbucks in Ikebukuro a woman would go round waking everyone up who'd gone there, bought a coffee, stayed four hours and was now asleep. Laughing

The one in Shinjuku must surely be up thee with Tokyo Tower so that tourists can watch everyone crossing the road.

There are numerous lovely privately owned cafes with their own personalities all over Tokyo though.

You mean Shibuya, right?

Shibuya, Hachiko-guchi.

Free wireless internet at Starbucks in Ikebukaro?

I thought you had to pay for the wireless service.

I have a favorite neighborhood place I won't name. But, if you frequent Starbucks when out and about, check out the one at Queens Square in Minatomirai, Yokohama. It has one of the best places to sit outside and enjoy a coffee on the bay, especially on nice summer evenings. It's just too bad that it's a Starbucks. Evil or Very Mad

to me, Starbcucks tastes over-roasted / bruned and is over-priced.

Detour, while having good coffee, is too smokey.

Blenz, Aoyama Dori, just steps from Omotesando Station. It's a Canadian franchise, eh!

They also stock maple cookies, and their treats are just the same as the ones back home. And clear across the Pacific, they honour my point card from Vancouver. Nice, eh!

Blenz, Starbucks, Doutor, Excelsior, and McDonald's. Does anyone drink coffee from a non-chain?

Given the number of times people get burnt trying non chain places it is just a matter of 'the devil you know'. Although quite bland and gimmicky Starbucks coffee is nevertheless consistent. It's funny but back home the inverse is true, I virtually never went to a chain and usually was disappointed when I did, but I know one in downtown Melbourne was always doing good business with Asian international students, rarely a local in sight.

Chris,

I know you're from Australia, right? When you're in a city like Brisbane or Vancouver, you don't really need to drink coffee from a chain. there are tons of independent coffee shops around - with nice coffee.

That being said, there seems to be a Starbucks on every corner in Vancouver.

In Brisbane, not only did I find Starbucks difficult to find (like 2 in the downtown core), they were very small. Not many coffee chain stores in Australia, are there.

And Taipie City has a ton of Starbucks -they're everywhere!

TL,

Thanks for the info. I'll have to check that out. I've always liked those maple cookies.

Isn't there a Blenz also in Akasaka, inside the station?

It's a sad world we live in when I need clarification on who's talking about actual coffee versus who's talking about $4 caffeinated sugar-water.
