One of the many peculiar characteristics I've noticed over the years about Brit male teflers (and not only in the Gulf) is how few of them actually possess driving licences. What is it with you guys? Never had enough money to take lessons? Or is it just another example of the old anti-materialist, anti-technology, I've got better things to do with my time ethos.
Yanks, of course, are different. Although I've never checked this, I suspect it's a capital offense in most states not to hold a licence after the age of 18. |

I don't have a car. I don't have a hand-gun, a bazooka or an Uzi either. Or a Cessna or a Boeing 737.
In the not-too-distant future our descendants will look back at our time and be truly amazed at how we messed up on the transportation business ! All those horseless carriages clogging up our streets and motorways ! Sheech !

| I'm British and I'm also amazed at people who don't have a car. I've had my license since I was 17. I get fed up with people without cars cadging lifts into town. I think they assume I like their company when I'm driving, but the truth is I'd rather just listen to a CD. BTW, how did this thread veer from the original subject of Polish women! |

The original poster asked if he really needed a car. If you are here with dependants it certainly makes a difference.
Tell the lift-cadgers to $&*^%& off ! I NEVER ask for a lift.
With some it is definitely parsimony that motivates them. I just decided some years ago that I do not want to have a car. Who said that economic decisions are rational ?
With Brits it is a generational thing. People of my generation grew up in a society where the car was a luxury.

Of course there is.
In Saudi culture there is an old saying that every man has the right to a camel, a sword, and a slave. Nowadays this is replaced with a GMC Suburban, a Barrel of Petrol, and a Banghali Driver. And the number of car accidents in Saudi Arabia is among the highest in the world. Is there a similar thing in Istanbul? |

Shady deals VN? I'm looking for one, a good one
What's that about places stealing one's wits? I think I left quite a few wits in KSA...well, half of them anyway.
Har, har, har!!!!!!!!!!!
In all seriousness, I do miss certain aspects of the place.
Driving there was a case of the Good, the Bad and the Ugly:
Good roads, bad drivers and some verrrry ugly cars. |
