I have a student who will be taking the test at the end of september.
They currently score around 600.
They've asked me what is the best way to prepare for the test, and what tips could I give.

Is there any technique to passing the TOEIC test as such? Apart from studying hard of course

I teach a couple TOEIC classes also, you could also have a look at some of the preparation course textbooks. I use the Oxford one but there is also one from Cambridge, Barrons and couple others. These focus on how to take the test effectively, but students often need extra help with vocab so boooks like the "600 words you need to know to pass the TOEIC exam" might be useful.

I've taught TOEIC and will do so again this upcoming semester.

Students can just study with the stupid drill books, if they like. If so, I'd recommend they use the ones with Japanese instructions.

Or, you can actually teach them...
1) better English and reading/listening skills in order to pass, or
2) test-taking techniques (not guaranteeing that they'll learn any more English)

Look at Rogers' book on The Complete Guide to TOEIC for some nice tips on the latter.

Look up what Joseph Falout has published (a couple of articles) on task strategies. Basically a 3-day intensive "summer camp" he devised before kids studied in a TOEIC course. I'm going to modify that for my whole semester course this term. PM me if you want details.
