Did you try cleaning out your browser's cookies or temporary files and then reloading the page?
On Firefox, Tools > Options > Private Data: Clear Now
On Internet Explorer, Tools > Internet Options > Temporary Internet Files: Delete Cookies/Delete Files.

FINALLY!!!!!! Very Happy

I can finally see the new page!!! Yaaaaaay!

It does look a bit touristy, as mentioned, but there's sort of a crispness to it that I like.

Woo-hoo!

Almost professional quality!

I think Dave looks best in his geek/nerd look. That's what built the spirit of his site in the first place.

I wonder if he's ever going to get all the parts of his site with the same look? Because the new homepage will work, but if every other page on the site is different, people will get confused. I think now there are something like 4 different styles over the website.

But then again content is definitely king, which makes the site work.

They still need to fix the silly capitalization -- which is better suited to websites designed by Ma and Pa Kettle selling Viagra out of their home in Arkansas than to a site for English teaching and learning.

Having a touch pad rather than a mouse, I don't care much for the zig zag drop down menu. 9 times out of 10 I end up in the wrong place and have to start again.

This is a common usability error made by amateur website designers.

Not really. The home page really is top-of-the-line for an amateur page.

The big tipoff that it's not a professional site is that you can actually get an e-mail address when you go to the "contact" page. Try getting someone's e-mail address from the website of microsoft or T-mobile! They are much too important to bother with things like their customers. Dave on the other hand doesn't have customers - he has a bunch of people hanging out on his website who he's too polite to tell to get lost.

What are the people who pay to advertise on the site then?

People and organizations that advertise are called "advertisers". Advertisers are not usually referred to as "customers", but as "advertisers". Shocked

Believe it or not, when you visit a website the first thing your computer does is to see if you have visited that URL before. if you have then it will load the webpage from memory to save time. To see the new page you will have to force your computer to load the page from the web by clearing out your cookies and stored webpages.

This is a comon conceptual misunderstanding. Dave's site has a large number of registered users (even users who were banned close to a decade ago or who have not logged on for many years and so whose accounts have gone inactive). Dave will then sell that number of users to potential advertisers, and so, by definition, they (the advertisers) are his customers. His product is his users and his customers are those who pay to get access to them through the website. It is the same with newspapers. Joe Blogs who buys The Sun everyday is not a customer of the paper, he is a product that is sold to the advertisers.

Nope, it may check if the page has changed since last loaded, but cookies certainly have little to do with it.

It is rare that the end users cache has any effect. It is more common for the ISP to have an out-of-date cached version. With Dave's and many other sites there is the problem that it is spread over more than one server and they often synchronize in a haphazard way (which explains all the hassle with dropped logins). I suspect the solution is somewhere between the ISP and Dave's servers.

I was ok with the change until they changed the job board page. The red font is a bit jarring and it's harder to see right away which jobs are new. i don't like it one bit.

Looks like they changed the font on the international job board page from red to blue. Much better!
