The two foreign English teachers I know that were caught working outside the specified range of fields within which they were allowed to work, were held in a detention center for 21 and 25 days, respectively. Upon release, they were immediately deported and prohibited from entering Japan for 5 years.

I agree with the others that you won't likely have any worries from immigration.

Let's say the odd chance that you did get caught by immigration(assuming you had a legal work permit), what is the penalty?
Don't worry about it. Employers have better things to do than consider calling immigration. If nothing else, they would try to fire you for breach of contract, probably nothing else.

Morning work, in my opinion, will be difficult to find. Who is available from 9 to noon to take classes? Housewives and retirees. I think most of them will be busy with household chores and errands. That doesn't mean nobody will be available, but look at it this way: eikaiwas usually operate from noon to 9pm for a reason.

Some can, JZ. My own kid has half day classes in that time frame.

I'd also be leery of Mondays simply because that's when most national holidays fall.

What would happen if Immigration found out? (It wouldn't happen anyway, but just hypothetically) Absolutely nothing.

As long as you are teaching English in your second job, what does it have to do with Immigration? I used to have a number of part-time jobs instead of one full time one (none of them had exclusivity clauses), and was not in breach of any Immigration law- why do you think you would be?

I have only ever seen Immigration officers at the airport and at the Immigration offices I have been to (almost 10 years in Japan).

As other people have said, your visa is not tied to your job in Japan. As long as you do not work outside the restrictions of your visa (i.e. barwork on a Humanities visa), then your situation has nothing to do with Immigration- you really have no worries there. You are free to work for whoever you like as far as they are concerned.

The only thing you need to be concerned about is whether that employer would try to fire you for working part-time. I also know loads of people who worked for schools with exclusivity clauses and also had private students or part-time jobs. Stay under the radar of your school and you will be fine.

Some business people also take lessons at this time, but it's true, it's generally difficult to fill your scheule at this time.

As mentionned above pre-schools or kindergartens may have morning work. At my daughter's kindergarten a Canadian comes in and teaches English from 10-12 to 3 different classes ranging from 3-6 years old. If you like kids it's pretty straight forward. He's been teaching the same 4 songs, the ABCs and Animals for about 5 months. Apparently he's due to start something new soon, but there's not a lot of prep involved. He only comes once a week though, so if you wanted to fill up your schedule you'd have to find several preschools-kindergartens.

I used to have a job exactly like the guy johanne mentioned. I went into a kindergarten every Friday morning to teach for a few hours.

I guess too much time in Korea. That is why I am worried about things like that.
