They said this would be an active hurricane season...

Keep your eyes on Dean...they haven't said exactly where it's going, but the good folk at the National Hurricane Center are tracking Dean out at sea.

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/archive/2007/graphics/al04/loop_3W.shtml

That graphic they have up has it smacking Cozumel dead on, Tuesday at 2 AM. It's already a category 4 storm.

...

An update from CNN

http://www.cnn.com/2007/US/08/18/storms/index.html

Quote:
Forecasters fear Dean will be a destructive Category 5 monster packing 155 mph winds by the time it reaches Jamaica.

Even worse could be yet to come. By Monday, as Dean nears Cancun and other tourist areas along Mexico's eastern Yucatan coast, its sustained winds could be 160 mph, with gusts approaching 200 mph -- wreaking new havoc on an area heavily damaged just two years ago by Hurricane Wilma.

Brace yourselves if you're out in that area...this one is going to be fierce.

No, but my parents called me last night to see if I thought we'd be okay. I was like Dad, you've been here, you've seen those mountains. Do you think a category 5 hurrican is going to make it over those with any force?
But I do expect a rainy night.

Any one else surprised we've made it to the 21 of August and the named storms are only up to D? Guess this is going to be a light (or late? Confused ) hurricane season after all.

It's too early to tell. The official hurricane season goes until November, but just a couple of years ago, there were hurricanes in December. I think the forecast by the meteorologists is for an active season.... and, Melee, you're forgetting Erin Smile

As of 10:00 a.m. Tuesday it's overcast and breezy in Merida. It rained a bit last night, but nothing major. The eye of the storm is projected to pass south of us sometime today, at which time we should experience tropical storm conditions. At the moment, I am quite enjoying the weather. Rarely is it cool and breezy this time of the day in the summer months.

At any rate, it looks like we may have dodged the bullet this time. On the down side a lot of villages south of the city will be affected. Homes there tend to be built in the traditional Maya way -- stick uprights and palapa (and sometime corrugated tin) roofs. For those folks the destruction is apt to be significant, unless the storm loses power over land.

Saludos,
Sharon

We had hail last night in Cholula, along with some serious winds and lots of rain! The wind seems to be picking up again this evening. It's also a bit colder than usual (from what I have observed in the 3 weeks I've been here!). The dogs and cows are making a lot more noise than usual too. Maybe they know something I don't....

Sharon,

Have you heard if Mani got hit? My in-laws live there and we think the lines are down.

Thanks so much

And HENRIETTE, which is expected to strengthen. We already have been issued Code "Azul" by the local powers that be.

I saw that only after I'd posted the Felix link. Henriette killed 6 in Acapulco in a landslide...but, that's common up in the hills every rainy season. Hope it doesn't hit Baja too hard.

Henriette has safely passed us in La Paz and is headed inland or so I've heard. Last word I got was she hit Gyamas and is still heading further in.

San Jose was hit but not too hard. I have to work in Cabo tomorrow so I'll see how she looks.

We are having such fun with earthquakes and hurricanes over here in Southeren Baja.
