| And watch out what they're weighing! I nearly had to chose between discarding stuff or paying extra because a bag had mysteriously gone overweight. I knew it couldn't be true because this was the second leg of a flight with stopover and it had been ok on the first leg. I insisted it was impossible, the counter agent insisted the scale must be correct. Fortunately just before things got ugly, it was noticed that the passenger at the neighbouring counter had her knee on my scale, as she was sort of leaning in a relaxed way while she talked to her respective agent. Who would ever think of checking for such a fluky thing! |

| Is the embargo always only weight related or does it apply to number of bags as well? I flew to Chicago on United one Christmas with very heavy bags...but 9 of them. I was told I had to leave one behind...8 only (between 2 people) A quick bit of repacking and I got everything in save for some fragile and cheap trinkets that saw the nearest wastebin. |

My mom tried to bring me a relatively large item packed in a box recently on that airline. It was 2 lbs over the 50lb limit, and the box was 1 inch too large. They would not let her bring it on the plane. She could not pay for excess weight either. They are bring strict on those limits.
My mom is not flying Continental again because of the hassles. Aviacsa seems to be cheaper anyway. |

| I just came down on Aeromexico (flight operated by and using Delta equipment) on August 3rd with 2 suitcases that weighed over 50 lbs each- one was 58 and the other was 60. I paid $25 for each bag, they slapped the orange HEAVY sticker on them, and tossed them on the conveyor belt. Both made it to MEX with no problem and the flight was completely full. Dragging them up 3 flights of stairs at my hotel is another story... |

I just checked out the Continental website. After a few clicks, I got to the page outlining their Excess Baggage Embargo policy. It has nothing to do with weather conditions or full flights or Mexican Customs regulations. It has everything to do with the time of year you are flying!
For example, the EBE is in force now for flight to Mexico (and to most other LA destinations) from June 4 till August 31. Other periods when it will be in effect are November 15, 2007, to January 15, 2008, and next year from March 14 to March 26. Obviously, all of these coincide with periods of heavy travel: summer, Christmas/New Year's holidays and Semana Santa. During these times, you cannot exceed the check-in limit of two suitcases, each weighing no more than 50 lbs. At other times of thr year, if your bags exceed the weight and/or size limits, you can pay a fee and still check in your precious possessions.
I haven't checked other airline websites to see if this is an industry-wide practice or peculiar only to Continental. |

| Ditto what MO39 said. They don't want to overload the airplane during peak travel periods and it also helps to minimize the time spent checking in. One thing to note though is that there is no weight limit on the two bags you can carry on to the plane (one in the over head bin and one under the seat) so pack your heavy things (like books) in those. I always weigh my bags on my bathroom scale and make sure they are one or two pounds under in case my scale is a little off. |

This is not true for American Airlines. There is a limit of 40 lbs. for each carry-on bag, according to the information on their website. |

Every airline has different rules and the rules are different depending on the time of year, related to how heavy the travel season is. They can basically change things on you any time they want to, and the best idea is always to check with the airline a week or so before you go, when you've got heavy/large/very important stuff to ferry abroad.
From someone who's lived in six countries and travels with a dog - really, I know a bit about this!! |

| You are right, MO39, and I recently discovered that it is not true for Continental anymore either. They limit carry-ons to 40 lbs as well. |

| We've got to help each other keep abreast of the latest attempts of the airline industry to make airline travel as annoying as possible! |
