I read in the business section of a turkish newspaper that a Turkish construction company (Yuksel) has won a contract to develop this road. The article mentioned it was 740 km long and will involve 1 tunnel and 5 bridges. Isn't this the length of the country? The Ras Abu Aboud I know is QAC, the Gulag, the Marriot and the old museum flats. where is the tunnel? |

From the staff room in the gulag, to just outside the Marriot.
Didn't you think it was strange when the staff suddenly asked for a vaulting horse?
And those patches of different coloured sand which kept appearing around the place? |

I don't know when you were last in Doha, BMB, but Ras Abu Aboud has changed considerably over the last year, growing from 2 lanes to 4 (dual carriageway) and following a wholly different route just after the Aeronautical College. Now heavy construction work has begun on yet more developments. It seems that the new road will run parallel to the existing one and will be a raised highway for at least part of its path. A large number of houses have been recently demolished opposite the Marriott. I imagined this is to facilitate traffic to the new airport, but 740km??? Surely some mishtake? |

It has been 4 years. I guess I wouldn't recognise Doha now. |

Ras Abu Aboud is soon to be no more The whole area is being swallowed up by the new airport and landfill. The only thing left is the Mariott Hotel.
The Oasis Hotel has been broken down into rubble and the sailing club may disappear soon too.
They built a 6 star hotel, Al Sharq Hotel, next to the old Doha Club (also long gone) which costs you an arm and a leg. The Parish Center has gone too and soon QP will be moving to new purpose built premises in Lusail. Goodbye Gazal Club. We lost the Falcon Club a couple of years ago - nothing there now but a strip of desert. Even the coffee/shisha complex has gone and the Ras Aboud Park. Nothing left. So the old Ras Abu Aboud will disappear forever and ever and only remain in the minds of the Gulagers as the good old days. |
