Actually 5000-6000 RMB a month is typical for University pay in Beijing. Salaries are dropping as the Olympic games near.

For those institutions that pay a real teaching wage, they are for 40 hour weeks and often require IB or experience in this type of system. Teaching certification from home country with ESL background and at least 1 content area certification.

Often it requires a related degree in education + teaching certification.

This is just part of the process as it is difficult to get these positions if you do not have some type of "connection or Guanxi."

Often these places will not recruit locally, but from abroad directly from host western schools that have agreements with the Chinese schools.

Most are NOT western owned or managed. (regardless of western sounding school names.

Most are connected with outfits from Singapore.

As previously mentioned the wages are much better here, but right now the industry is being flooded with certified teachers at the retirement age, so these positions are difficult to find right now.

Be prepared to get offers around 5000-6000 RMB a month (free housing though) in Beijing.

Others have a Master's degree in education (or higher) and various TESOL certifications and + 5 years experience are getting offered jobs within this pay range.

Beijing pay levels are the worst for the pay ratio/ inflation+ expenses, right now.

As other posters mentoned on 5000 a month you might not be able to save much or not be able to do anything except to sit in your room. You might be able to afford cheap local Chinese styled entertainment avenues , shopping trips are out of the question especially as the prices are doubled for foreigners.

I think our friend here was asking about teaching at kindergartens, not universities, where salaries do tend to be slightly higher.

Regardless, it looks like she's decided on Korea.

Best wishes!

in my case the extra hours are spent with the kids. you are not teaching but babysitting while they each lunch go outside to play.... the list goes on. u may get some time off while they have a nap but i am willing to bet that you will spend 40 hours around kids. I only teach 40 min a day, but i am around the kids the whole time from 8 till 5, not including 3 hour nap where i get a break and get the hell out of the school before they cook something up for me to do. also i am getting paid 7000 but for wuhan that would be making 10000+ in beijing because wuhan is dam cheap taxi starts at 3 yuan. I get the free house and that too. I would be very interested in how many chinese teachers u will have too. if you dont speak chinese i would say you need 1 teacher for every 5 kids thats what i have but the kids are still next to impossible to control
