Fellow Teachers, for the last two weeks, I have taught CYL's in Xi'an. I teach at a local university full-time and I'm a little confused. Some of these students have been studying English for 4 or 5 years and they can barely speak complete sentences. I have been in China for four and a half years and this has surprised me. The school is only open on the weekends and I would imagine that 70% or more have other full time jobs during the week. How else is one to buy that house that costs 4000 RMB per meter squared if you live in Xi'an. I spoke to a group of students today and their answers were in one or two words. Students I like apple, hamburger, hot dog , sausage etc when I mentioned this to my fellow Chinese teacher in the classroom, she translated into Chinese for our students and the next three or four responses were just as bad. Last night I GOOGLED Assessment Tests for Cambridge Young Learners and I came across several websites , but when I clicked on to them , they referred me to another website that had nothing to do with my question. I doubt if this school assesses their students to put them in their proper level. Does anyone have a web site where I can find some type of testing material to help this school. That would be for CYL'S ?? Come to Xi'an and I will buy you a beer. Thanks in advance for your help. I typed this out over and hour ago and then I previewed it and my computer shut down. |

I meant that 70 % of the teachers had other full time jobs during the week. I will probably only see each class two or three times a semester. |

I, too, am confused. Cambridge Young Learners books are designed for children aged 7 - 12. |

Thanks Aussie Guy in China. I neglected to mention that I teach young children on the weekends twice a month. Hopefully this clarifies the situation. Any help would be appreciated. |
