The school I'm working at now wants me to take the Cambridge International Diploma for Teachers. I may be moving to Canada next year and was wondering if anyone has any idea whether this diploma would be recognized there or at any of the better international schools here.
I'd appreciate any answers. |

This question might be better over on the teacher training forum, I think. You'd probably get more feedback. I can't speak to the use of the diploma in Canada...i can tell you that most people find them extremely practice for TESOL. If you find a dip/MA programme, that would be probably be more worth your while long term-esp. if you'd like to eventually move into higher paying university positions. In the US, the dip would not get my a job at a university. |

It's surprising how much kudos the name "Cambridge" still has.
I remember an Ameriucan in Oman telling nme breathlessly about somebody who was just sooooo clever "She has TWO masters degrees and one of them is from Cambridge University in England!!!!!"
In other words, she had an MA (Cantab) - Cambridge only does MA's - and a genuine (?) seconmd degree from somewhere else. |

Yes, a peer of mine in my MEd TESOL cohort did her undergrad at Cambridge. Before finishing her MEd TESOL she was offered a job w/ AMerican University in Dubai, but only because she had her masters from Cambridge-nothing to do w/ the TESOL. |

Interesting the fascination with these pieces of paper... and the past reputations of the name universities. I also went to the Gulf with the idea that the British system was superior than ours. But, I quickly found that the product that it sent off into the world was not.

It's true, VS. There is that perception w/ some employers that British is superior. |

Actually you do have to apply for the MA and pay for it, otherwise you've just got the BA. At my college they found so many didn't think it worth the extra twenty quid or so, that they bundled the cost with the initial matriculation fee, which meant that most of us got it paid by the LEA.
At one interview in Saudi, after I explained the system, I was told, "So it's buy one and get one free!" I liked the phrase so much I've used it on various occasions since. |
