I thought this guy was a loser until I read some of the worse losers who actually supported him and/or put down China.
Typical ignorant and intolerant people whose China-bashing posts we used to read in the old days on Dave's. |

What a freaking ridiculous thread! Forgivr my French.
How could any one on that post sympathize with him. An employer treats him like a king, everything as promised, apartment all set up for him... Dear Capricious, let us know the school, so we can work there.
Oops, and then they are upset that he leaves on no notice. Now they have to try to beg other foreigners to cover your class. So prodfessional . You SUCK! That is what I would expect from a 18 y/o kid working at McDonald's for his first job. Thanks for giving us all abad name. I just hope you aren't American
Most ironic was

Huh? He gives himself about one day to know the city at most. Pathetic |

what a bunch of crap. so the guys signs a contract, the school lives up to the contract, the guy is in shanghai for a day and a half says no i'm a little baby who didn't prepare for anything so i wanna leave regardless of what i have agreed to and now feels he is a victim.
wow. on top of that most contracts i have seen have a probationary period of about 1 month where either party can give 1 weeks notice 1 month at the most. |

in the kindy thread that ping jing guy only seems to have lasted about 2 weeks in his new job - his excuse was that it took too much energy - but no comments there
I think there are a lot of folk who quit quick - the real reason is that they're kind of timid and nervous about teaching so far away from home. And please lets have more of them - to show Chinese employers what A-holes they are for employing any living skin as long as it's white!!!!! |

Yeah, nice job poisoning the well, Ass-hat. How many times do you think a reasonable employer is going to offer reasonable terms after getting burned by crybabies like you?
I don't live in China, but this is borderline BS to me. He claims he was getting the equivalent of 65,000 Baht (15,300 RMB) plus housing, TV and internet in Shanghai for 20 hours a week? Recruited from outside China? |

Playing Devil's advocate: When Jiaotong university hired myself and 2 other FTs to teach this Aussie program, but the 2nd in command (I won't give his name cuz he's a high level party member) decided it would be more lucrative to go with an American uni...what happened to us after signing a contract ? Off to find other work in mid-September. Did we get any compensation? Yes, a "I'm sorry"- And this wee story: I got to know who and what kickbacks each of the players got !!! And we're not talking 10 or 20 thousand RMB either.
This year signed a contract with Qinghua, and the contract stated no working outside of said contract: I turned down a fair job, 7,000 RMB part-time in middle schools. So this Monday I'm not working,no income, a mortgage to pay, a stressed-out marriage....compensation ?"I'm VERY sorry".I don't have details like last year, but no matter-still scre.wed
The guy was impetuous, I've been so ,haven't any of you folks ? It's not right, but by and large, those folks call a recruiter, browse the internet and pluck up another FT in no time, but when they are in the wrong....And lastly, if he was offered that good of a contract-he's actually compounded his mistake by running back to Thailand for peanuts.Mai peng rai |

Oooohh, I don't like that story at all. I joined that website so I could post this response:

Listen, I'm not going to defend all things Chinese. There are plenty of dishonest schools and wacko employers. HOWEVER, the OP's original post does not paint a full picture. A lot of responders are berating China and even the school itself when the main reasons that the OP fled is because:
A. He was overwhelmed by the sheer size of Shanghai
B. He missed his girlfriend
C. He didn't speak the language (duh!)
D. (not said but implied) He realized that the comfort of something he knew (Thailand) could not balance with the newness and difference of a place he did NOT knew (Shanghai, China).
To accuse the employers of being at fault due to the fact they became less-than-friendly after he told them he was leaving is very unfair. I can understand why the OP left, but I don't agree with it. He simply didn't give the new situation enough of a chance. Also, depending on where you work, there are a TON of holidays given in China. October 1 to 3 (and maybe to the 7th) is a national holiday. 7 days is enough to make a visit to Thailand and the girlfriend. In January comes a possible (again, depending on where you work) month long holiday for the Chinese New Year and Spring festival. Then, before you know it, there 's a week long May Day holiday. In a blink of an eye, there's the two month summer holiday.
I live and work in China and I love to visit Thailand when I can. I get a total of 3 1/2 months of paid holiday per year. Plenty of time for me to travel. Let's not forget weekends and, if you're a good employee, you may be able to negotiate for a Friday off from time to time for a long, 3-day weekend.
I guess my point is, just like in Thailand, there are good and bad things about China, esp. for a "laowai" (or "farang"). I just think the OP went about his departure in the wrong way. |

I love these "I'm tough I can stick it - feel good" threads - they really bring on a bought of FT solidarity. This is after all welcome relief - and a bit of departure from the usual posts which talk about being forced into accepting the kind of daily professional indignities that often go with FT China white-skin trade (not so much tough in those kind of threads).
I'm not defending the jerk who left his job - but with it being so easy for any white jerk to get a job here - what do you expect

Extracts from "The CCP English Dictionary"
- "China-bashing - Anything that suggests our wonderful, glorious homeland with over 5000 years of cultural and social history is anything less than perfect. Example: "I love China-bashing" (Posted by "I Hate China and All Chinese People - America Should Nuke Everybody" on Dave's ESLCafe.)"
- "China-basher - A person who suggests our wonderful, glorious homeland with over 5000 years of cultural and social history is anything less than perfect. Example: "Hey, you China-basher! You no like, you go home now!" (Posted by "I luv Chiner Beijing 2008 Glorious Olympics 5000 Years of History America Gotohell" on Dave's ESL Cafe.)" |

If China bashing - on the EFL front - is telling about how the job of FT really works - then bash some more
After all - there doesn't seem to be much substance behind the I love my China EFL world - apart from the - "if you can't stick it go home" posts.
I've been 4 years with my employers - but I have been constantly bashing for the kind of working conditions that I find acceptable. But then again you really don't have to bash - you can just accept your FT fate meekly - and when it all gets too much just get up and leave for a new job!!!!!
Geeeeeeeeeeez - was that another "I am tough - I can stick it" post |

To paraphrase vikuk, the only way you can begin to improve things is by pointing out where/how things can be improved. Obvious really.
But do so nicely! |
