Let me just set the record straight - I thought it was just Mexicans who don't get this: Mad

UK has 4 countries

England
Scotland
Northern Ireland
WALES (why does everyone forget Wales?)

To say IRELAND usually refers to the Republic of Ireland (Eire) which is just that - not part of the UK.

Here endeth the geography lesson.

I have (university) students that think Africa is off the coast of England, that Mexico is the biggest country in the world, that England is bigger than Canada etc.

Many students here also refer to the UK or England as London to the point where they assume any English person is from London. Geography is not a Mexican strong point.

Phil,

Im afraid your geography lesson hasnteth ended yet,
Using UK and Ireland together is generally accepted as covering the British Isles in its entirety, i.e. both parts of the island of Ireland.

Also, whether the constituent parts of the UK can be considered as countries is debatable.

Its only Melee's school which has forgotten Wales!

I am not sure how many Irish would agree with that Wink

That's why I teach it in three parts, emphasising the correct terminology.

1) British Isles - all the islands and including Eire.
2) Great Britain - "great" referring to the greater or bigger island i.e. England, Scotland & Wales
3) UK - The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - for political reasons.

BTW - why do Mexicans insiste on "La Reina Isabel de Inglaterra (sic) (should be GB), when Elizabeth is common enough in Spanish names?

We haven't forgotten, just never had many Welsh applicants. I can recall only one out of thousands and thousands.

Melee, I think now I've met two Welsh EFL teachers, and I was glad to hear them speak standard English, more clearly than the average natives of Ireland.

I finally got Spanish installed on my keyboard; can we find an excuse to say maana, prob y demas_ ooops, no I can{t find the question mark !))(]($%M;:_]]?? there it is.

I can never find the question marks, I always forget where they are. I wish I could change the little symbols on the keys themselves. I spend a lot of time trying to find my punctuation.

Are there sticky dots that we can post on a standard keyboard, showing the proper signs like punctuation marks? Couldn't you make your own dots and stick them on your PC keyboard?
