Majali is employed by MOHE at the rate of OR1600 per teacher placed by him into one of the MOHE academic institutions. If you are being paid at a rate of, say, OR800 permonth, you know how much is being pocketed by Majali.

What's the big deal about earning a commission of 1600 OMR? He's not doing anything illegal, and the commission is paid by his employer, not the people he recruits.
Car salesmen earn commissions. So do arms dealers. |

It certainly explains why he doesn't recruit more qualified teachers. |

He receives OR1600 per teacher per month. This is information one would consider to be important, considering other placements outside of Majali's recruitment offensive receive salaries far closer to the MOHE mark than received by Hawthorn teachers. |

What about the rest of your benefits? Are they paid out of this 1600 per month? Your flat, visa, tickets and medical?
To me there is only one detail here... is he paying you less than the market for teachers with your credentials and experience in Oman?
This is why I very much dislike the whole concept of recruiters. It seems to always be the teachers who are shortchanged...

Once again I will say that I was recruited by this person.
Once I signed the contract I never spoke to him again. I am being paid directly by the MoHE at the full rate for my qualifications.
Quite frankly I do not give a toss what this person makes in commission, we all have to make a living. It would be a different matter where he creaming off the top of my salary, but he isn't.
Oh yes, where did this magical figure of 1600 OMR come from temujinsky???. How can you made such a bald statement without providing evidence

I doubt he is being paid 1600 rials per month per teacher. Are you sure about this temujinsky? Or is he paid a one off 1600 rials?
Please confirm this. |

That was my immediate suspicion... a one-time payment makes sense, unless the recruiter is also the one paying the salary and providing monthly benefits for the term of the contract.
There is no way that the Ministry would be foolish enough to use recruiters so that they could pay double the salaries for the length of every contract.

In discussion with several long-term members of MOHE it was confirmed that friend Majali received monthly OR1600. This covered all aspects of recruitment, salary etc. It is to be MOHE modus operandi from now. All recruitment is said to be devolving toward private means such as friend Majali's.
Majali is also director of firms such as in hospitality, autombobiles etc.
There is absolutly nothing sinister about Majali.
It behooves foreigners to Oman to realise that information is not easy to gather. It hides in globules of inertia until someone kicks it. |

You do not say that he recieves that amount per teacher. So, is it a single payment of 1600 OMR per month as a fee, or is it that amount per teacher by way of commission??
Whichever way you look at it Mr Majali is a businessman, he is obviously not doing it for free. So he makes a profit - that is good business. Why does the Ministry keep employing him? He must be doing something right somewhere.
Who suffers? Not the person recruited by him (unless things have changed since he recruited me), because he or she signs an exclusive contract with MoHE and is looked after by them never ever having to contact him again. I do not know how Hawthorns treats their people but I do know they pay less than Mohe, as do CfBT who I know look after theirs very well.
Do you have a personal problem with "friend" Majali?

You are stating the obvious to those of us living here, albeit in a rather oblique way. What on earth has that statement go to do with this thread??

I could take that very personally. I am well experienced and well qualified to teach ESL. Do not tar everyone with the same tacky brush!!

Well Duffy... you would admit that a number of your colleagues have been... much like MM describes. One does come immediately to mind...
And the finders fee of 1600 OR per teacher makes absolute sense and fair enough. Information can be hard to come by in Oman... and is often not exactly... accurate.

Well VS, I have to agree with you there.
If we are talking about the same person, that is someone who has proclaimed over more than one forum he/she had an "MA and 20 years overseas teaching experience", yet still managed to get fired from three MoHE colleges in as many years, you are right. But did our "friend" Majali recruit that person?
This business about "1600 OMR". If temu-whatsit had made a better job of her opening post on the thread, reaction would have been more modest. But to give the full tabloid "shout it to the world" style of post just confuses the heck out of people.

That is not the impression that the OP gave initially and I am still trying to work out why??
Also, I would love to know what the "mod edit" in the OP's first post was??

I think the edit removed the full name which the mods usually do to make it less easy to google the tales that show up here.
Good policy really...
