It was mentioned that international schools pay much higher than the NET Scheme. Doesn't anyone of you know approx. how much/ how many % higher?

Has anyone of you considered applying for international school teaching? If yes, why would you choose NET Scheme over international schools?

Thanks in advance for any insights!!

I've said it before on here and I'll say it again...... you CAN be a NET without a CELT/TEFL qualification.
It depends on your other qualifications, majors and relevant teaching experience. If you don't have a teaching qualification, then you'd need to do it.

The contract specifies this as a requirement - it actually has a clause that says if you don't have a TEFL/TESOL then you will get this qualification in your first year in HK "in your own time and at your own expense" and your school can insist that you uphold your agreement to do this.

My Dip ed is in high school English teaching (and History). I don't have a TESOL qualification, and have never been asked to get one. I've worked in 2 different schools in HK. I also taught ESL in Taiwan and the mainland for five years before coming to HK, and was a DOS and head teacher in different jobs, all without a TESOL qual.

Anyway, in HK it appears to be up to the school as to whether you must get the TESOL qual. It is an issue that neither of my two schools has ever brought up.

Yes, I agree HH.
Just after I arrived here, the EMB person at our NET induction program said that qualified teachers with teaching experience in country where English is the first language wouldn't need to get TEFL.
When I signed my first contract a few days later, the clause was there and I wondered if I'd have to do it (I have a teaching diploma + B.Ed in Primary Teaching).

Nobody mentioned the TEFL.

When signing the next contract, the clause was there again. I told the principal that I'd sign but wouldnt' be doing this course, so if he wanted a TEFL-trained NET, then he'd better get someone else. No problem.

It wasn't referred to when I signed my third contract (again at a new school).

EMB don't chase this up - like most other things, it's up to the school.

There seems to be quite a lot of HK NETs without TEFL and if that clause were to be enforced, there'd be an even bigger shortage of NETs than there is now.

We never did hear from 'lanceevan1' again, did we? Do such people ever come to HK, or do they just chicken out and continue to stay at home watching crappy TV soaps instead?
