Hello,
A couple of questions:
-What is the tax rate in Vietnam? I have been told both 12% and 20%.
-When does one start paying tax, before or after getting their work permit?
-Can one open a bank account without a work permit?
Someones help is greatly appreciated. |

The tax rates are
0 - 8 million dong - untaxed
8m - 20m dong - 10% tax
20m - 50m dong - 20% tax
50m - 80m dong - 30% tax
You pay tax whether you have a work permit or not and you can open a bank account without a work permit.
Officially, if you have been in Vietnam for less than 183 days, you pay a flat rate of 25% tax on all your earnings. After six months you should get a lot of this back as a rebate.
What actually happens is some schools pay you according to the table above immediately, no 25%. Some schools take the 25% and give a rebate after 6 months. Before working for any school make sure you ask how they handle taxes. There are unscrupulous schools that take your 25% and won't give a rebate. See www.saigonesl.com for blacklisted schools. |
