There seems to loads of online shops for British food, shipped worldwide. The one I tried, http://www.britsuperstore.com , had Marmite (125g) at 1.83 GBP. I continued to the checkout to get the shipping costs, which were over 8 GBP (this would be more economic if you ordered many things) with 15 days delivery. The whole cost, using the currency convertor, was about $240 MN.

Got me thinking about other things - British bangers, pork pies, Horlicks, Ginger nuts, Branston Pickle, Christmas pudding ... Razz

I bought a Christmas Pudding (small) in Palacio de Hierro in Centro Coyoacan a few years ago, $175! It was $350 for a big one. I haven't found one since. I'd make my own but.....

(here we go again)... where can you find suet and black treacle (molasses)?

So there is a way to get it. I don't think my wife would go for the $240 outlay on a jar though, especially as she's of the 'hate it' camp.

Phil, those things haven't been found in England since 1958... Wink

Phil,
I'm about to share with you, and everyone else reading, about one of the big secrets of an ex-pat in Mexico.

Shop in the feed stores. Animal feed stores that is. I was once interpreting on a composting demonstration. This was on how to make a super fast compost, a style developed in Japan. One of the secrets was use molasses. I turned to the course organizer and shouted MOLASSES? Where do you get that? (You seen I'd been bringing it down from the US for use in my bread machine) "Any feed store" as the answer. Well I went in search of molasses and it turns out you can also get whole grain (brown) rice, cracked wheat, barely and rye grains there as well! The only problem is they all come in rather large containers--enough barely to eat barely soup every day for a year!

Molasses is one thing that I have never encountered here before either! Had my mom bring me some down this past January as this past Christmas was one of the few that I did not (could not) make gingerbread cookies!!!! Shocked Crying or Very sad

Its still in the cupboard waiting for this Christmas to come around so I can use it up!

Thanks for the feed store tip Melee! Will have to remember that when this batch runs dry!

Great tip, Melee...now, to find a feed store. I miss good rye bread and would be willing to make it if I had the grain.

Speaking of feed stores, I was just having a discussion with friends about stray animals, in particular bunny rabbits. Stray rabbits appear to be in abundance here. A woman who helps with a local animal rescue organization chimed in that the feed stores buy rabbits all the time. I was afraid to ask why. Maybe Melee knows.

I have question about another British sauce... is worcestershire sauce available here? Is it what they call here "Salsa Ingles"? or is that something different?...

Thanks

Yes, worcestershire sauce is Salsa Ingles, but its not quite the same quality as the real deal. It seems to have a higher sugar content, or some other intangible thing that makes it not quite the same.

The brand we buy tastes the same to me. But I note that piloncillo is the ingredient listed before azucar. Limon is listed nearly last. It has a label by Crosse & Blackwell and says Worcestershire Sauce, in English (small print) and then SALSA TIPO INGLESA, Receta Original" in big letters. "Tradicion desde 1706" Smile

P.S. I see Dragonlady posted the same info seconds before I did!

That'd be why then.. I could never find the Crosse & Blackwell and had to settle for other brands. Crying or Very sad I've been looking for it here in Boggy lately too, with no luck.
